Cyclists going as fast as 40mph will speed past spectators Friday in the city's Civic Plaza.

The public is invited to watch any of the eight amateur and pro races planned for starts between 9:30 a.m. and 6p.m., as well as enjoy live music and food from local vendors. Bring lawn chairs and blankets and find a spot near one the tight turns for the most excitement.

For the second year, Brookfield is one of the host cities for the International Cycling Classic, being held this week in cities from DePere outside Green Bay down to Chicago.

In Brookfield, the women's and men's pro races are slated to begin about 3:35 p.m. and 5:45 p.m.

All races start and finish on Calhoun Road just south of the Civic Plaza, 2000 N. Calhoun Road. Cyclists pedal north on Calhoun, turn right into the entry drive to the Public Safety Building, traverse the turns around that building's lot, head south to Gebhardt Road, west to Calhoun and north to the finish. 

Here is a map of the 0.9-mile route. The southbound lanes of Calhoun Road will remain open during the races.   

In addition to cheering on the bikers, Brookfield East senior Nora Collins () will perform from 3:30 to 5 p.m., followed by a 7-piece variety band Caught in the Act.
