Azana Salon and Spa Family Are Brookfield Patch's People Of the Year
For their courage and strength they have shown all of us as they deal with the tragic event that unfolded at their home in October.
They displayed in the horrific moments of that morning, when gunfire rang out, bullets hurdled past then and death was near.
They showed it in front of the throng of media during the hours, days and weeks afterward and as they comforted each other through this unimaginable ordeal and mind-bending sadness.
They mustered it when they reopened their place of work, telling the world that love and compassion and not fear nor hate conquers all.
If anyone, anywhere ever needs an example of it, they can find it in this strong and close group of hair stylists, nail technicians, massage therapists and estheticians.
As a result, we at the Brookfield Patch has named the family of Azana Salon and Spa the people of the year for 2012.
This family includes Zina Haughton, Cary Robuck and Maelyn Lind, who lost their lives and all of those injured - both physically and emotionally - during the tragedy in October. We also honor their family members who continue to bear the sadness of their loss and the horrors of that event.
It also includes Tami Gemmell, the owner of Azana Salon and Spa and the matriarch of this family, for the way she comforts and guides her staff and the community as she herself continues to grieve and rebuild her business.
It includes the employees and clients who were either there that day or had the courage to go back after the salon and spa after it reopened. And, let's not forget the greater salon community, for their support and strength they shown to those that were effected by the tragedy.
