Barrett, Falk Raise Big Bucks Before Primary

Kathleen Falk leads the way in fundraising with $1 million, while Barrett trails not far behind with $750,000 raised. However, Gov. Scott Walker reported $12 million in the campaign account in January, but has been fundraising around the country since.

The top two Democrats in the May 8 gubernatorial recall primary announced Friday that have have raised nearly $1.8 million in their effort to unseat Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

Former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk said she has raised $1 million since she announced her candidacy in January. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett announced his campaign has taken in $750,000 in 25 days between March 30 and April 23.

“I’m so grateful for the broad coalition of support that I have received from people all across Wisconsin," Falk said in a statement. "We have built the big tent of support needed to beat Scott Walker.

"In an extremely short period of time, we were able to bring people together and raise $1 million dollars because they know I am the only candidate with the backing to beat Scott Walker and end his ‘war on women,' " she added.

Barrett’s camp, on the other hand, said 99 percent of their contributions were generated through private donations. The Barrett campaign had roughly $500,000 on hand when he entered the race March 30.

"In a little more than three weeks, thousands of people, the vast majority from Wisconsin, have rallied around Tom Barrett's vision of bringing our state together, focusing on jobs instead of ideology, and ending the political turmoil caused by Scott Walker's partisan warfare," Barrett spokesman Phil Walzak said in a statement.

Two other Democratic candidates, Kathleen Vinehout and Doug LaFollette, hadn’t issued a statement on there campaign’s fundraising efforts. However, Vinehout reported in January that she had just more than $25,000 in her campaign account.

Candidates’ finance reports are due to the Government Accountability Board on Monday.

In the meantime, Gov. Scott Walker and his supporters have continued to march forward with fundraising as well, and the total eclipses all Democratic challengers combined on that front. Walker reported in January that he had raised $12 million, but has been traveling around the country raising funds since.

The Wisconsin Democratic Party on Friday announced that one of the state’s largest business lobbying groups, Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, purchased a nearly $1 million ad buy that will air in all major media markets throughout the state on Monday.

The WMC ad doesn’t mention any of Walker’s Democratic challengers, the group’s vice president Jim Buchen told the Associated Press Friday.

“The idea is to talk about the positive benefits of Scott Walker’s accomplishments,” said Buchen in the article. “There have been millions of dollars spent criticizing the governor and misrepresenting his record. We think it’s important for the public to know the truth.”

Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate criticized the ad buy, claiming that Walker gave the group a tax cut, and it’s virtually a quid pro quo exchange for that favor.

The Tea Party Express, arguably the most influential Tea Party organization, is also launching a $100,000 “Money Bomb” campaign to fund a “Tell the Truth” ad campaign in support of Walker. Donations are trickling in from across the country.

And the unions spent $3.5 million on Falk ads just because she did the favor of signing a pact with them, to restore collective bargaining, at tax payer's expense. Quid pro quo?

I know details are not important, but let's see if I can help the author.

"The Wisconsin Democratic Party on Friday announced that one of the state’s largest business lobbying groups, Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, purchased a nearly $1 million ad buy that will air in all major media markets throughout the state on Monday."

Actually: " Wisconsin’s leading business lobbying group announced today that a $2 million television ad buy supporting Republican Gov. Scott Walker would hit the air statewide Monday"
And: "A labor-sponsored group announced Thursday it was starting a $1 million ad buy in support of Democrat Kathleen Falk."
Both were in the AP article.

Did anyone watch the Ed Show last night? Apparently Walker is mailing fundraising brochures to residents of New York. Not hard to imagine who's paying for that. I don't think any other candidates can afford to do this. It's hypocritical for Walker to complain about out of state money when he's raising the most of state money.

ONly far left liberals watch that propaganda unless they want a good laugh. Humm, hard to guess on that one. Wait, I got it! His campaign funds with are around $12 million paid for the postage and printing. Super expensive, not many in the free world can afford stamps and paper with Obama in the white house.

Steve, folks who want to hear all sides of the argument watch MSNBC, Fox, etc., plus read multiple newspapers/magazines (like me). Not sure what you mean, "His campaign funds with are around $12 million paid..." but if you trying to convey that the mailing cost $12 million, my intended point was the mailing was paid for with Super PAC money--thanks Citizens United.
And Walker has raised a lot of out of state money.

I still don't see the point, sounds like wasted air time to talk about someone mailing brochures. Must be why that show gets only 230K views per night. Funny you only talk about seeing things on the Ed show or MSNBC or the daily Kos.

Steve, I provide sources from nationally and internationally recognized newspapers--official sources. I watch Fox and Sunday morning political shows. I find with Fox that assertions are made but there is little source data provided and that is usually from a partisan source such as the Heritage Foundation (which can't add by the way).

Fox is helpful in introducing viewpoints (factoids) but overall MSNBC does a better job of sourcing their assertions. Regardless, the source data has to be checked/verified to eliminate spin or significant omissions.

Daily Kos is an online community with a small team of "house" writers and about 300,000 community members who can write articles and comment on others'. Like MSNBC the "house" writers especially source their work, which the independent researcher must check/verify.

Just ignore the fact that the public employees use their dues to fund and elect candidates who promise to give them a raise in salaries and benefits - EVERY YEAR!

OR, that here locally; smart, informed and concerned Voters are outvoted by the Teacher Union employees and their friends who keep putting the same losers/incompetents on the Racine Unified District School Board.

BUT... let the private sector try and protect it's interests, combat the union propoganda and lies, and rein in big government tax and spend.... and it's UNFAIR!
It's quid pro quo!

Like public employee unions voting their book every election WITH their hand out - then getting it filled - isn't quid pro quo. THAT'S WHAT THIS ENTIRE ELECTION NULLIFICATION PROCESS IS ABOUT! OMG! The public employees were told to share in the economic pain of their neighbors - and it ignited a firestorm and a recall!

Falk and Barrett are nothing but QUID PRO QUO in this election! That's what it's about! Union public employees getting theirs and screwing their neighbor more!

enicar, public employees receive compensation packages, just like in the private sector. Why does this misinformation about public employees persist?

And I'm not a public employee, but I understand that they are given the option to provide support for political candidates--that this does not come out of their dues. Perhaps someone else has definitive information about this.

No misinformation here. The public sector votes in those with an implicit promise to raise their salaries/benefits for doing so. The private sector does not have that capability.

Attempting to deny reality - because it makes you uncomfortable, or doesn't suit your agenda, doesn't change the reality. Lies are not the truth - you need to stop spreading them.

enicar, doesn't everyone vote for the candidate that they believe will best represent their interests? You can't isolate one group and accuse them of this. Public employees receive salary and benefits. Some of them are Republicans.

I don't spread lies.

Clearly you mean to obfuscate and create confusion.

IN an election for public officials - WHO HAVE TAXING AUTHORITY - the situation is markedly different. Your failure to recognize/grasp that is either by design, or indicative of "OTHER", which would then result in me being accussed of being insensitive. Your posts clearly stand as an argument for tests being administered prior to voting - or at least minimum standards being applied -

Bren: I appreciated your attempt to inject reason and intelligence into this converation, but I feel your attempt is falling on deaf ears. It seems that democracy & fair representation by some is only allowed if you share their narrow views/beliefs. It is becoming more apparent these days that the freedoms & fair play is no longer applied towards Educators, women or those who happen to fall on the "supposed Leftist, educated & elitist" label of the political scale. I am not sure if it is fear on their part towards intelligent and fair negotiations/compromise or if they just simply want to dictate to the rest of us.It almost seems like they would want to turn public service workers into nothing more than slave labor with not voice or rights. I do however, find the hypocrisy in the "Union dues fund & elect candidates" statement when I am sure if any of these blowholes looked into their companies donation cauphers they would probably find a lot of corporate money goes towards overpaid execs and campaign funding rather than better wages and benefits for their employees. What I find missing in this whole debate is the fact that despite all of Walker's touted benefits to these "reforms", WISCONSIN still HAD the WORST JOB GROWTH in the WHOLE COUNTRY, and the state sales tax has dropped due to the starving of the needed expendable income towards the local economies. Brilliant, just brilliant by those who claim to want what is best for this state.

What a LOAD OF DRIVEL:

PLEASE - define "the vast majority from Wisconsin" - give groups, numbers, names... National and International Democrat Labor Organizations will flood the State with money and ads...

Barrett want to end "partisan warfare" by completely looting the private sector, so he can be alone with his his public employees in fantasyland and live happily ever after.
The private sector is just baggage and needs to be eliminated - the public employees will run the State by themselves and live in paradise. I know it's true - because they said so.

Funny how the article doesn't even mention Falk's promise to restore collective bargaining priveledges but instead the manufactured "war on women" that the progressive liberals have manufactured to distract people from the occupy howler monkeys whining that they have to contribute to their own pension and health care.

Clearly Kathleen Falk and Tom Barrett don't want to address their WAR ON PROPERTY OWNERS of Wisconsin! They make no distinction between the public employees, who are tax beneficiaries, and the private sector, who are the tax providers. These distinctions are fine, but need to be recognized - and quite frankly, we have large numbers of people who cannot mentally grasp the distinction - so we head for disaster with the intelligent people being voted down and the LOOT and SCOOT continuing!

We need to completely overhaul the tax system and find different ways to finance government - it's NOT working - BUT, we'll ignore things like that and allow Civilization to collapse.

shawn, I agree the "war on women" is manufactured, by the ideologically-radical Tea/GOP. They don't realize or care to ignore that making contraceptives more expensive, focusing on ineffective abstinance-only education, and making it more difficult for women to seek redress for pay discrimination affects males and females, especially as there are more female financial heads of household than males right now.

I'll also correct you on your insulting misrepresentation of the Occupy Movement. This movement started in New York City and has spread across the United States.

And I'll correct you on your mistake about (I assume) complaint about public employees--they already did contribute to their pensions and health care as part of their compensation package. This should be an understandable concept to anyone who has employer-provided health coverage--your portion impacts your net pay. Blaming public employees for the expense of the pension fund is ridiculous as it had/has "0" liability. Asking them to pay "more" toward their pensions and health care is effectively doubling their contribution (on top of 16 furlough days under Gov. Doyle).

I'm curious about the "Asking them to pay "more" toward their pensions and health care is effectively doubling their contribution (on top of 16 furlough days under Gov. Doyle)."

Are they still being forced to take 16 furlough days? If they are not, then any increase in contribution cannot be 'on top of 16 furlough days', can it?

The issue I take with the claim that they 'already contribute' is that in many cases, the total compensation of public sector workers is significantly greater than a comparable private sector worker. For example, it's rather uncommon for private school teachers to be compensated better than public school teachers.

@Brett -- No, because women like Kleefisch and McKenna don't think their kind of woman will be adversely affected by any of these measures, having their good Conservative men to take care of them, as is meet. They're still wearing those blinders that tell them that economic success is a reflection of their moral superiority.

The recall candidates no longer have to emphasize the collective bargaining issue (although it's still important) because Walker and the GOP legislature have gone on to push through a conservative social agenda that has nothing to do with jobs or the economy.
