Man Steals New Berlin Mayor's Handgun for Drug Money

Mayor says he was not aware of the drug problems of his daughter's friend, who allegedly stole items while staying overnight.

While staying at the home of New Berlin Mayor Jack Chiovatero, a Brookfield man allegedly stole the mayor's handgun and other items in order to pawn them for heroin, a criminal complaint says.

Cory T. Naber, 21, a friend of the mayor's daughter, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Monday with two counts of felony theft, and one misdemeanor count each of theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Chiovatero told the Brookfield Patch Tuesday that Naber was a "friend or boyfriend" of his daughter who occasionally stayed overnight rather than drive home late after watching movies.

"I didn't know his history," Chiovatero said. "I didn't know he was a drug user or anything like that."

Naber stole a handgun and two magazines the mayor kept in a dresser drawer and $190.

Chiovatero told officers he has noticed a number of items missing from the residence in recent months, including a violin, two guitars and two gold chains.

On Friday, Naber admitted to police that he stole the items, plus a handgun from his own father’s residence in order to trade them for heroin in Milwaukee.

Naber was being held in Waukesha County Jail on $3,000 bail. Waukesha County Court Commissioner Martin Binn ordered him to have no contact with the Chiovatero family or residence, and said he could not possess alcohol, drugs or firearms.

Waukesha County Circuit Court records show Naber was convicted of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia for incidents in 2007 and 2009.
