Update Nov. 19: Brookfield Square mall's website now lists the mall stores that will open at midnight Thursday as Black Friday begins. As of Monday, the listed included Boston Store, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Old Navy, Bath & Body Works, American Eagle Outfitters, The North Face and about 40 more businesses.
Shoppers this year will get the longest possible holiday shopping season from Black Friday to Christmas morning — and Brookfield Square mall retailers plan to take full advantage.
Black Friday 2012 falls on the earliest day possible — Nov. 23.
With Nov. 1 being a Thursday this year, and Thanksgiving by law being the fourth Thursday of November, Nov. 22 is the earliest possible Thanksgiving.
"Obviously, the longest time we can have between Thanksgiving and Christmas is the best result for the retailers," Brookfield Square mall general manager Scott Oleson said in an interview Friday.
Mall opens at 5 but many stores opening earlier
Brookfield Square mall officially opens at 5 a.m. on Nov. 23, but any store wishing to open at midnight or anytime between midnight and 5 a.m. may do so. A list should be on the mall's website soon of which stories will be open when.
"Last year was the first year that we allowed stores to open at midnight and it was extremely successful," Oleson said. "Now a lot of other stores are jumping on the midnight bandwagon."
Some holiday events already are in full swing at Brookfield Square mall. Santa arrived Nov. 3 and will be here through the season.
Mall greeters are handing out coupon booklets with special deals at Brookfield Square mall stores. The booklets are also available at the mall's guest services. Store are preparing sales and doorbusters.
"Things are peaking at the right time," he said. "We’re looking foward to a very good Christmas season this year."
