Two Elmbrook students and three educators have been chosen to receive a 2013 Herb Kohl Foundation award.

The $1,000 awards are being made to 100 teachers, their schools, and 187 graduating high school students throughout the state.

The following Elmbrook students and teacher have been chosen:

Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Excellence Scholars 2013

• Collin Steen, Brookfield East High School

Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Fellows 2013

• Laurie Horne, Wisconsin Hills Middle School
• Thomas Juran, Brookfield Central High School
• Brian Balfany, Pilgrim Park Middle School

Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Initiative Scholars 2013

• Matthew Enters, Heritage Christian School

Excellence Scholarship recipients have demonstrated excellence in the academic arena and high motivation to achieve, have displayed a broad range of activity and leadership outside the academic setting, and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond.

Excellence Scholarship and Fellowship recipients are selected by a statewide committee composed of civic leaders, and representatives of education-related associations and the program’s co-sponsors: The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools (WCRIS), and regional Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA). 

Fellowship recipients are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, their ability to motivate others, and for their leadership and service within and outside the classroom. Each Fellow’s school will also receive a $1,000 grant.

Initiative Scholarship recipients, chosen by their schools, have demonstrated exceptional initiative in the classroom and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond, but have not yet received other academic-based scholarships. “I think it is significant that Wisconsin’s students, teachers, and schools are recognized for their devotion to education and learning,” said Michael Lancaster, WCRIS president.
