From 'Laughter' to Tears: Brookfield East Forensics Captivates Audience

Preparing to travel soon to two national tournaments, East Forensics team members performed their competition pieces Friday night at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts.

Archit Baskaran performed "Laughter," his state championship four-minute informative. It was his third state championship in forensics and debate. He's performing at both the NCFL and NFL national tournaments in public forum debate.
Freshman Noah Haselow performed Harrison S. Brown's "The Social Responsibility of Science," an oratorical declamation. Haselow will be performing in that same category at the NCFL Nationals in Baltimore.
Sophomore Hannah Shepherd performed an original oratory "Invisible Heroes," a touching tribute to her brother. She will be competing at the NCFL in original oratory.
Gabriella Smurawa performed Ursula LeGuin's "A Left-Handed Commencement Address," as her oratorical declamation. She will perform in that category at NCFL Nationals in Baltimore.
Anisha Verma performed an oratorical declamation, "Learning Styles" by Claudia Hopkins. She will also compete at NCFL Nationals with the piece that honors teachers.

For seniors it was their last chance to shine at home — performing the speeches and acts they will use to compete in two upcoming national tournaments.

The award-winning Brookfield East Forensics team put on a 2 1/2-hour show at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts Friday night.

Acts ranged from Archit Baskaran's four-minute informative about the benefits of "Laughter," to Kyle Wessel's moving performance of Michael J. Fox's "Lucky Man," to senior Jennifer Vosters' dramatic interpretation of Sunny Jacobs, a woman falsely convicted and left on death row in "The Exonerated."

Team members will travel to compete in the National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL) Grand National Qualifiers in Baltimore, MD, from May 25 to 28. Some also will travel to the National Forensics League (NFL) National Qualifiers in Indianapolis, IN from June 10 to 16.
