Is Tommy Thompson the Right Candidate for Senate?

Former Wisconsin governor and Bush administration cabinet member Tommy Thompson is running for U.S. Senate. Is he the best choice for Republicans to take over retiring Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl's seat?

Former Gov. Tommy Thompson is making a run for the U.S. Senate. Is he Republicans best choice?

Yes

Thompson brings instant name recognition to a wide-open race to replace Sen. Herb Kohl. He's won statewide elections, and his experience would help him get things done in Washington.

No

Thompson brings baggage. He'll have to answer questions about his spending as governor, including massive deficits he left behind, and he was a polarizing figure in the state. He's also older, which means Republicans could be looking for another candidate in six years. Finally, Sen. Ron Johnson came from relative obscurity to beat incumbent Sen. Russ Feingold. A low-profile businessman may be more difficult for Democrats to attack.

Got thinking about this story after realizing Ron Johnson's success against Russ Feingold. Do Republicans really need a big-name candidate? Maybe to raise money ...

If you have high interest rates on your credit cards and don't like it, thank Tommy Thompson. As Governor, he lifted the 18.5% cap on credit card interest rates. There was no reason to do that except to toady to Big Business. He left Wisconsin's finances in a shambles and trotted off to serve GWB. People with short memories like to blame Doyle, but years of good-for-business bad-for-people policies logically would take years to reverse (if it was even possible). Tommy Thompson isn't what Wisconsin needs.

So based on your comments you would institute policies that are bad for business?

How about if you have high interest rates on your credit cards - CUT THEM UP? Or work to get a better credit rating? Stop playing victim. Sheesh.

Jeff Klass, are you serious? 18.5% was more than fair for a credit card interest rate. It was a usury law that protected people. Immediately after that bill was signed, credit card rates shot up to 22.5%.

And concerning your personal attack, please refer to my original post on the subject: "If you have high interest rates..." If you're going to attack me, go after me for what I've actually written. Challenge me on my facts, counter my arguments. At the very least, read my posts correctly! Stop playing lazy. Sheesh.

More than fair? Who decides that? Kind of like The One saying "after some point you've made enough money", right Bren? Want to cap my earnings, too? Or just take them away for economic stimulus? Or is that punishment for being successful? The line blurs.......what do you have against businesses? What do you have against wealthy people?

You're right. We should give everyone with no income $25,000 credit limits and to borrow that at 3%. That will really keep banks open.

Tommy has been a lobbyist for years. He would not have the best interests of the voters.
I say NO, we need a strong Democrat to put the balance in the state government.

Nah. Let's fillit up with a strong CONSERVATIVE, which the esteemed Mr. Thompson most certainly is not.

It's not state government, it's national government, where, up until recently we've had two Democrats for a number of years. If you like the way the national government is operating, elect more Democrats.

That being said, Tommy Thompson is, first and foremost, all about Tommy Thompson. He's the perennial coy potential candidate and every time something opens up that might keep his name on the radar screen a little bit longer, he comes out and flirts with the pundits and generally does more to screw up the chances of a legitimate candidate than anything else of a positive nature.

I can't believe people still buy this crap, but at least it seems like less and less of them do.

I was looking for the introduction of Jesse Jackson. If that one was still around and available on YouTube, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Who's the best alternative to Thompson? We've heard Tim Sullivan and Mark Neumann. How about Van Hollen? He's won a statewide race.

I would take Tommy over Mark Neumann. I just have issues with Mark Neumann in general.

Not interested in Van Hollen. Too RINO for me. If we could clone Ron Johnson --- a true citizen legislator. Neumann would sort of fit that mold, but there's just something....

Jeff Klass, do you mean Ron Johnson, the guy who married the Bemis heiress and was given an executive position at PACUR in 1979, the company his brother-in-law Pat Curler (Pat Curler=PACUR) founded to supply Bemis in 1977? The guy who lets people believe he founded his own company? Let's break that lying mold, not clone it!

Nobody would be surprised or shocked by anything he might send via text message, so potential scandal of that nature in office pre-empted, at least.

Herb Kohl was the perfect senator because he was self-funded, intelligent, and pro-Wisconsin. He always looked out for our state. His shoes will be hard to fill.

Herb kohl is a do nothing douchebag elitist who will best serve this state by dying already. Perfect poster child for term limits.

I think you have Kohl confused with Sensenbrenner. Substitute Congressman for Senator, and you have it.

When Tommy was Governor he started the State's financial problems. His wife being a teacher, he raked us over the coals to teacher's benefit.
His mess is still with us today, and I can't forget his "stick it to 'em" comment.
Tommy should go hide under a large heavy rock.
