Obama Leads Romney by 8 Points in New Marquette Poll

Marquette University released the last poll results before the Nov. 6 election on Wednesday.

The race between President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney appears to be shifting once again, according to a new Marquette University poll.

Obama leads Romney by eight points in the latest poll results, 51 percent to 43 percent in the state.

Two weeks ago, the race was declared a dead heat with Obama garnering 49 percent of respondents' votes to Romney's 48 percent.

This poll was conducted after all presidential debates were held, and Professor Charles Franklin, director of the polling project, said the polls reflect how well voters feel their candidate performed.

Among most interested likely voters, Obama still retains the lead, albeit a much smaller one with 48 points to Romney's 46 percent.

When it comes to the US Senate candidates, Democrat Tammy Baldwin comes out on top once again. Two weeks ago, former Gov. Tommy Thompson led Baldwin by just a point, 46 to 45 percent.

Now, Baldwin is garnering 47 percent of the vote, while Thompson gets 43 percent of the vote, just outside the margin of error.

Voters who are classified as the most intersted likely voters still choose Baldwin over Thompson, but only by a point; 47 percent to 46 percent.

The poll was conducted from Oct. 25-28, 2012 amongst 1,243 likely voters by landline and cell phone with a 2.8 percent margin of error.

A total of 1,404 registered voters were interviewed and that sample has a 2.7 percent margin of error.

Hardly a conspiracy Ebbie when there are photos/video of Illinois vans parading people in for early voting. And YES...H>E>P> is right, the silent majority will come through again just like in the recall vote. Say goodbye to Obama/Hillary. We now have proof they both got the 3am call on Aug 15th from the Ambassador and they did nothing but watch our Americans die! Shameful!

I don't think the polling is biased, inaccurate more likely. The poll 2 weeks ago had decisions from 97% of those polled, this poll had 94%. It is unlikely that there are 3% more undecided voters 2 weeks closer to the election. In the end it is only a poll, if these polls had any standing we would be saying Governor Barrett (typing that made me gag a little).

Joe Biden and Bill Clinton locking down Ohio in Youngstown, two days ago.
I'd hate to be Mitt Romney, because I'd hate to be that kind of dick. But I'd also hate to be him because of today's numbers in key battleground states.

Quinnipiac University, on behalf of CBS and the NY Times, stuck a dagger in Romney's Ohio hopes by showing President Barack Obama up 50-45, as well as a one-point lead in Florida and two-point lead in Virginia. Marquette University, the best pollster during the Wisconsin recall, now shows Obama winning the state 51-43. Their last poll a couple of weeks ago had it 49-48 Obama. PPP has Obama cruising in Iowa 50-45, and in Wisconsin 51-46.

This is it, the stretch run, and Romney is losing ground almost everywhere. Let's look at our handy chart of the battleground state composites, but this time I'm comparing the results to that of 10/19—the Apex of Romney's numbers in this feature (he had better numbers in a handful of states at other times, but close enough)....

Douglas, I took the time to visit the Daily Kos link morninmist provided. I found that the analysis sources actual poll results. Whether one agrees with the subjective portion of the link (analysis) the hard data was presented so that the reader may draw their own conclusions.

Here are the links of interest: http://polltracker.talkingpointsmemo.com/contests/us-president-12

http://www.nationaljournal.com/daily/anger-aside-voters-favor-d-c-status-quo-20121031

An area I found interesting in the National Journal article was the aspect of voters wanting to compel cooperation in Congress (although methodology applied leads in another direction).

I also found the idea of a "smoking gun" in the Libya tragedy interesting. One could arguably describe the entire country as a smoking gun, powder keg, really apply any ordinance/incendiary-based analogy. Who, in the reality-based world, didn't expect some retaliatory gestures from antisocial forces?

@Bren -

"Who, in the reality-based world, didn't expect some retaliatory gestures from antisocial forces?"

Apparently, our current President and Commander in Chief, Barack Obama (D), and our current Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton (D), who both failed to order increased security in the region, especially on the anniversary of 9/11, despite receiving repeated requests for increased security from Ambassador Stephens himself.

So, if we follow your logic here, then according to you both Obama and Clinton must not live in the same "reality-based world" as the rest of us, right?

Does this mean that you'll be voting Romney/Ryan?

It;s going to be exciting seeing Obama sent packing along with his running-dog lackeys, however, the worst of the damage he has done is irreparable. Two rubber stamp Communists appointed to lifetime positions on the Supreme Court. Both basically unchallenged by foolish, spineless RINO's. Ginsburg, Sotamayor, and Kagan – just like the three witches in Macbeth. To Obama and his minions in the media I would apply this adage: Some people are born great…..some people achieve greatness…..and some people just grate on your nerves! Obama will be defeated in a landslide.

Generally, this close to the day of the election, the 'undecideds' go to the challenger.

That makes the election outcome: Obama 51,Romney 49.

Within the MoE of 2.8 or 2.7, if one can figure out which poll is connected to which race(see above article).

“I respect and will protect a woman’s right to choose.” Or “I never really called myself pro-choice.”

“I’ve been a hunter pretty much all my life.” Or “Any description of my being a hunter is an overstatement of capability.”

“It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam.” Or “I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there.”

“I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush.” Or “Ronald Reagan is… my hero.”

“I will work and fight for stem cell research.” Or “In the end, I became persuaded that the stem-cell debate was grounded in a false premise.”

“I would like to have campaign spending limits.” Or “The American people should be free to advocate for their candidates and their positions without burdensome limitations.”

“I supported the assault weapon ban.” Or “I don’t support any gun control legislation.”

“The TARP program… was nevertheless necessary to keep banks from collapsing in a cascade of failures.” Or “When government is… bailing out banks… we have every good reason to be alarmed.”

I like how the Republicans think it's in the bag because Scott Walker won. They don't understand that Obama is winning because of the Independent vote, a vote that Scott Walker was able to win. It doesn't matter who the Democrats or Republicans vote for, it's who the Independents vote for. The Independents want Obama more than they want Romney, just like they wanted Walker more than Barret. Independents don't stick to one party voting like everyone else.

Polls don't mean snot til election day, and even then, exit polls from the polling places are never correct or even near accurate.

Plenty of polls this election, most polls put the two at a near dead heat, and depending on which poll you look at either Obama is up by a point or two. Or Romney is up by a point or two.

In the end... Obama's time in office is numbered... You can't beat this fact, so don't try. :P

Wouldn't it be wonderful to wake up in a week and realize that Wisconsinites had helped Obama have his much-deserved landslide over the two (2) most mendacious candidates the Republicans have ever taught to lie with straight faces. Wisconsinites have regained their political determination to fight again the near fascistic behavior of the right wing radicals; fight so that their children could retain their Christian-judeo-Islamic social contract between one another; and, fight to protect their precious democratic republic. Four years for Obama to complete his vision to repair the damage done by republican misguidance, war-mongering, greed, and self-interest.
Maybe in addition to rejecting the Randian ethics as immoral, people began to realize that if Hurricane Sandy happened under Romney there would be no PUBLIC to salvage the PRIVATE. Stay the Course; protect our nation from becoming "the dictionary definition of 'plutocratic oligarchy'": Stay the course - move Forward and re-elect #Obama.

@Lyle Ruble. First of all, I have run a corner lemonade stand. I also was on the Board of Directors for an industry related organization. Not only that, I was a Restaurant General Manager for years responsible for the bottom line.
Therefore, I have way more "Executive Experience" than our current Pretender-in-Chief.

@Keith Best...Your CV appears to be a little slim to claim "Executive Experience". I don't see any business ownership except for your lemonade stand comment. I don't think you are necessarily well qualified to comment on Obama's capabilities. However, that does restrict you from commenting as well as any other citizen. Now I know why you constantly spout GOP talking points.

What we get is responses like the following:

Your kind
cower under the table
get a job
question your intelligence
running-dog lackeys
Communists
foolish, spineless RINO's
Obummer
Get a job!
do you just pull this stuff outta your arse?

US Manufacturing Expands At Faster Pace In October
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON — WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. manufacturing expanded for the second straight month in October, boosted by growth in new orders and production.

The Institute for Supply Management says its index of factory activity rose last month to 51.7, up from September's reading of 51.5. A reading above 50 indicates expansion.

The ISM is trade group of purchasing managers. Previous surveys showed manufacturing contracted from June through August.

Stocks jumped after the release of the October report, along with another showing consumer confidence surged last month to the highest level in nearly five years. The Dow Jones industrial average, which had already risen about 70 points after the opening bell, was up 139 points in morning trading....

@Michael McClusky....Since when has it mattered in DC what the citizens want? The Citizens United decision hasn't changed the basic system that has been present. Special interests have always controlled the government. If you read Madison in the Federalist Papers, he saw this as a way to bring balance to government to have competing interests. This is part of his belief in checks and balances. We have been set up in a dichotomy from the very beginning. You seem to be pretty naive about this whole thing.

@Lyle The difference now is that the federal government has absolutely no money. It is caving in before our eyes and the corporate elite laughs, demanding more tax cuts and more ridiculous trade pacts. The presidents of the late 1800's were inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. The guilded age, the robber barons. We are there again.

Someone once said that a republic cannot last along with a plutocracy. One must fall so that the other can thrive.

thank you, Mike McClusky, for making the positive arguments for voting (and running ) 3rd party. I would rather be right than vote for the "evil of two lessers", as we too often do with elections. As for the Bob McBride arguments about 'wasted votes" and "you might as well realize that your guy is not going to win", with us it's the ideas that animate us, and the very fact that the GOP and Dems know there is a candidate who can take votes from both sides (Johnson is not on the hard right on social issues or foreign affairs),and that he is a credible person who could easily handle the job of POTUS. Nice to have someone making the case for balanced budgets, downsizing the federal monstrosity, real entitlement reforms, and the FairTax to replace the income tax system. Much more positive change and innovative ideas, that hopefully the "big boys" take seriously if they want to make headway on the mess we have in DC.

The only thing you do is satisfy yourself that you've washed your hands of any responsibility for whomever does get elected. And unless that's your true intention, you've wasted your vote. @Bob McBride You honestly don't believe that the budgetary mess will be rectified without campaign finance reform, do you? The Republicans and Democrats have already sold out to their special interest masters. Washington is such a filthy place that it would take an outside force to clean it all up.

The first order of business should be to find a very intelligent and honest individual to look through the federal books in order for us to see what those rascals are really up to. Both sides cook the books for their own advantages. Then we'll finally see how both of those parties have betrayed the country. Plain and simple.

I don't even know where to start with you.

Have either of you guys been close enough to a major campaign to observe some of the workings? I have. I've been fortunate at different points in my life to know people who worked with presidential, gubernatorial and mayoral campaigns at the level where money changes hands, candidate itineraries are arranged, candidates are transported and babysat, etc. I've met some of the candidates and their families myself and hung out with some of them (family members - presidential) on one occasion. I'm telling you, if you think you're dealing with puppets who are gonna roll over because of "campaign finance reform" (as well as that's worked in the past, btw), you've got another think coming. These people didn't get to where they are by being puppets. This isn't some Dr. Evil operation run out of a volcano island hideaway where the heads of corporations meet to unleash candidate-bots on the world. These are professional, smart people who have gotten where they are for the most part by being just that and being better by degrees (and in some cases, just luckier) than thousands who are their near equals.

You guys live in some dream world you've created where truth, justice and the American way wins out over corruption. And all you have to do is get your guy, front and center, and the nation's gonna see how different he is and demand change - if we can just get that darn campaign finance reform...

@Bob McBride After the Citizens' United case of 2010 things will only get worse with time. The American people will become less and less of a factor of what goes on in Washington. Heck, it was bad enough before that case. No one can truly say what the hell these candidates actually intend because they are told to be as vague as possible. Corporations are people- they are selling a product that is not for us to know.

Romney and Obama lack integrity because both flip-flop on any issue that might come up. They are there to win. They aren't about substance. And you support this charade.

It's not a matter of worse. It's always been this way. CU exists thanks to attempts to control "campaign finance" as much as anything. The complaints about the influence of money, etc. have been going on forever. CU's just the latest focal point for those who don't seem to understand that or don't want to admit it.

Last year I spent most of the year clearing out the family home, in the process going through a number of periodicals and newspapers. If you'd taken the dates and names off of them you'd be hard pressed to tell the stories in them from those we read today.

None of this is new. The system, as goofy as it is, works as it always has. The challenges we face today that we can't seem to grapple with successfully have to do with technological innovation and a shifting global economic balance of power. We either can't or won't acknowledge that. Instead we'd rather waste time focusing on stuff that's not going to change and, even if it did, wouldn't address those challenges successfully.

It's not a matter of supporting it. It is what it is and, frankly, you've presented nothing that indicates you even understand it, much less possess the ability to change it. You work with what you've got and focus on the real issues. You don't start tearing things apart in search of something that isn't there, never was and never will be.

@Bob McBride Both parties are flops. Both of them are incapable and unwilling to actually do what is right for the country. They can't make meaningful spending cuts, they can't raise revenues, and they can't re-examine the assinine trade pacts that we have made in the last 20 years. They are content with the status quo because their masters make a hell of a lot of money on the deal.

Short term gain is all that matters. You know- quarterly profit reports.

Michael, I've done very little digging into the Libertarian party. I'm going to say that, based on this discussion, I'm not encouraged to do much more digging into it. I don't sense any better understanding of what's changed over the past 20-30 years in this nation, what's at the core of the issues we face today or of a direction forward.

Perhaps some of it might make sense. Certainly at the local level there's a lot of room for improvement and positions are not so hotly contested on a party affiliation basis. I would suggest starting there, build a reputation for making improvements (if you guys can) and then you may have something to move up the ranks with. Make people want what you can provide instead of relying on trashing the competition and trying to play spoiler. I don't think the public is really looking for more disagreeable noise at this point and that seems to be the road you guys are choosing - if I'm to go by I'm experiencing here.

@Bob McBride The Democrats want to raise federal spending by 4.5% while the Republicans want to raise it by 3%, The Libertarians want to actually reduces federal spending.

The Republicans and Democrats want to maintain our military presence all over the world. The Libertarians want to actually pull our troops out of most places- the Cold War is over.

The Libertarians want to reduce federal spending in our communities and therefore reduce the fed's power and influence.

The Libertarians openly question the independence of the Federal Reserve. They feel that this institution will lead to our ruin.

In essence, the federal government can no longer afford the same old programs and policies. It is time to pull back on the size of it.

Madison police are preparing for a second visit by President Barack Obama in just over a month, and the Monday visit will include an appearance by rocker Bruce Springsteen, the Associated Press reported.

Spokesman Joel DeSpain said police are working with the Secret Service on a security plan for a rally by Obama on Monday, the day before the presidential election.

Past presidential visits have involved several hundred officers from Madison and other area law enforcement agencies, DeSpain said.

The Obama campaign confirmed Monday’s visit but did not release any further details.

In October 2004, presidential candidate John Kerry drew a crowd estimated at 80,000 people to a Downtown rally with Springsteen.

I saw Obama yesterday claiming the new job numbers are proof that his policies are working and that we are in an economic recovery... Fact is, that is not the truth, or even close to the truth...
First, the unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9% and the year-to-date monthly average of 157,000 payroll jobs is barely enough to keep up with population growth -- much less make up for the 8 million jobs lost during the Great Recession.
Second, the so-called real unemployment rate (U6) remains elevated at 14.6%, albeit down from 14.7% the prior month. Similarly, the labor participation rate is at 63.8%, up from its multi-decade low but still incredibly weak.
Third, average hourly earnings fell a penny in October and average hours worked fell to 34.4 from 34.5 in September.
Stagnant wages means "we're not generating income," Reinhart says. "That's a problem in terms of the durability of an economic expansion, which is usually fueled by consumption. To get consumption you've got to generate income."
Also, just look at your checkbook. We are paying a lot more for everything now than we did in 2008. The price of gas has doubled. At the same time, wages have gone down, and that's if you're lucky to have a job.
In 2008, 25 banks went out of business. In 2012, 48 banks have gone out of business. Almost double the amount. Does that sound like recovery to you? Don't believe the Obama lies!!
