The Week Ahead: Economic Development, Police Recruiting Top City Ticker
Along with blocs of regular city business, this week features farther-focused discussions on the makeup and marketing of Brookfield and the police chief's take on the future of officer recruitment.
There's a fairly full slate of city business on the calendar for early this week, including convenings of a couple of the panels that meet more rarely – one of them, only quarterly.
The Economic Development Committee starts things off with its monthly meeting at 5 p.m. Monday at City Hall, with reports from the Greater Brookfield Chamber of Commerce, the Brookfield Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and the city's economic development coordinator’s presentation on the 2013 Work Plan.
There will also be updates on the Brookfield Development Loan Fund, the Industrial Façade Improvement program and the city's marketing plan, a review 124th Street Corridor plans, and a discussion of city entrance signs.
The quarterly meeting of the Police and Fire Commission begins at 3 p.m. in the Main Conference Room at City Hall. The main feature on the agenda is a an important one: a discussion of the future of recruitment for the Brookfield Police Department.
This will include an update on the Waukesha County Municipal Law Enforcement Recruitment Association. Police Chief Dan Tushaus and Human Resources Director Jim Zwerlein will be presenting to the commission and prepared to answer questions.
Later Tuesday evening, standing Common Council committees will convene prior to the regular meeting of the full council.
The Finance Committee starts at 7 p.m. in the North Conference Room. Highlights are a resolution in support of the preservation of tax-exempt municipal financing and a previously tabled resolution allocating proceeds from sales of city-owned properties at 785 S. Calhoun Road and 835 S. Calhoun Road to the Community Development Authority special revenue fund for future use in redevelopment activities.
The Legislative and Licensing Committee, also beginning at 7 p.m. in the Main Conference Room. The "hot" topic on the agenda is a discussion and possible action on an ordinance amending parts of the municipal code regarding the Fire Department, fire prevention, fire inspection and open-burning regulations.
The full Brookfield Common Council, beginning at 7:45 p.m., will consider and take action on a number of items from the Plan Commission meeting and from the Finance Committee just adjourned.
From the Plan Commission come requests from several developers:
Brookfield Elderly LLC wants approvals of a slew of plan alterations for a 25-bed memory care facility at 460 S. Calhoun Road.Plan Commission. The plan requires approval of an ordinance allowing rezoning and grading to raise parts of the property above the floodplain.
A request from Sutter Creek LLC seeks approval of a public hearing on repealing an ordinance permitting a landfill operation at 1300 S. Barker Road and rezoning the property as residential for the development of 144 residential units.
The Community Development Department wants approval to schedule a public hearing on regulations for outdoor sale and display of products, tent sales, sidewalk sales and outdoor sale of plants and produce at grocery stores and produce stands. Any changes formally proposed after a public hearing would require amending multiple sections of the Zoning Code covering commercial districts.
