It was a neck-and-neck battle with more lead changes than a March Madness college hoops game.
There was a dizzying last-minute race by supporters of the two veteran establishments (who obvious are also very computer savvy), with more than 2,000 votes lodged just between about 7:30 and 8:30 a.m.
The final tally: 4,886 votes for Silver Spur and 3,973 votes for The Red Mill.
With all votes tallied, there were 8,966 votes cast. Thanks to everyone who participated and shared information about good local places to get fish fries.
Winner Silver Spur's menu offers an $8.95 luncheon entree of "our famous beer-battered cod" with fries and chowder. For dinner, Silver Spur has three fish entries: beer-battered cod, baked cod and pan-fried lake perch. It comes with a choice of homemade potato pancakes or fries, slaw, apple sauce, "our award-winning Southwest Tartar" and a cup of chowder. Dinner prices: $11.95 to $16.95.
Silver Spur was located for years at 19990 W. Greenfield Ave. in the Town of Brookfield before a 2008 fire prompted its move to its current location in the former Elm Grove Inn at 13275 Watertown Plank Road in Elm Grove.
Second-place finisher, The Red Mill, is also no stranger to Brookfield, in fact known as Historic Red Mill. Offering live jazz on Wednesday evenings and karoke on Tuesdays, the Red Mill touts on its menu its "Famous Friday Fish Fry."
Available Fridays are "lightly fried" beer-battered cod ($12); extra large "lightly breaded" Lake Perch and your choice of potato served with coleslaw, tartar, and lemon ($15); baked cod "seasoned with white wine, a touch of lemon juice, butter, Lemon pepper, paprika, and parsley, Baked to perfection and served with drawn butter and a lemon wedge" ($16)
