Barrett's Primary Win Not As Impressive As Walker's

In four weeks the state of Wisconsin will finally put this dark chapter of public union rebellion behind us.  Scott Walker will face Tom Barrett on June 5th to determine which one will finish off the term Walker was originally elected for.  A recent poll by Daily Kos has Walker beating Barrett by 50% to 45%; however, many others have them in a dead heat.  With poll numbers that close, turn out will be the biggest factor in either candidate winning.  Could the turn out for the recall primaries offer some hope to Scott Walker?

The Democratic primary was a short lived but heated race.  Kathleen Falk had the backing of the majority of unions; while Barrett was more respected by Democrats for his toned down rhetoric and less divisive attitude.  Either way, this primary was the first opportunity Democrats had to voice their disgust against Scott Walker in the voting both.  The final tally reflects that they came out in considerably larger numbers then they did in 2010.

In the 2010 Democratic primary Barrett won receiving 210,921 votes out of a total 233,185 Democratic votes.  This primary was not contentious and as a result the total votes cast were low.  As we turn to the results in 2012; Barrett won with 390,109 votes out of a total 650,817* Democratic votes.  Barrett had four challengers in 2012 unlike the one unknown challenger in 2010, because of this and the current political environment it was not a surprise to see nearly three times the turn out.

Unlike Barrett, Scott Walker’s last two primaries had the opposite circumstances.  In 2010, Walker faced two other challengers including Mark Neumann.  This resulted in a high turn.  Scott Walker won that primary with 360,032 votes out of a total of 614,511 Republican votes cast.  However, in 2012 Scott Walker did not face a real challenger; yet, Walker received 626,538 votes out of a total of 646,458* Republican votes cast.  In comparison to Barrett, Walker actually received more votes in a primary that was less important to his election.

In a primary that was dedicated to the Democratic Party; Scott Walker received almost as many votes as all 5 Democrats combined.  While turn outs for primaries are never as high as the final election, it must be asked if the GOP passion to defend the Governor runs deeper then the Democratic hatred for the Governor.  Also, of the votes that Walker received in the primary, he can count on all of those votes returning for him in the recall election.  Barrett on the other hand will have to convince the remaining Democrats that he was the correct choice; while most will fall inline in order to achieve the ultimate goal of removing Walker, there maybe a contingent that is disillusioned by one of the other candidates losing and not willing to support Barrett.

In the end, time will tell whether the numbers above are any indication of the how the next four weeks will end.  Nonetheless, Republicans should remain strong and confident that the fellow members of their party are dedicated and ready to STAND WITH WALKER.

*I understand that both races included candidates that were stooges put in place by the opposing party.  The numbers have little effect on this discussion.

You spent a lot of words saying little. If all the voters come back for the general and they vote for the same party then Barrett wins - 650,817 to 646,458. Do you really think Falk's supporters and the rest are going to stay home and mope? This whole election is based on the concept of getting rid of Walker. You can try to massage the numbers to give you hope, but Walker better dig up some more supporters or he is going find himself out of a job. Of course, there is always the next recall...

@St. Swithin
Since some 2 million votes were cast in the last Governor election; do you really think that I assumed those totals were all we had to work with on the actual election. Walker needed 30K votes, most Republicans understood that. The fact that he got over 600K shows his base is energized and I argue, more energized than the Dems.

I think there was a cross-over vote for Falk that may put Walker over the top, in raw numbers.
But this is still just a primary, it has no effect on the general election.

The GOP side was Walker vs. a quasi-opponent. Naturally the numbers would be higher. Most people I know didn't vote in the primary at all. They were waiting to see who would emerge and vote accordingly in June.

That might sound lazy but it's really not. The bar has been set so low with Walker. I'm convinced that the 20-something who ran against him in the primary or even Gladys would bring more passion and focus to the job than Walker would.

"I'm convinced that the 20-something who ran against him in the primary or even Gladys would bring more passion and focus to the job than Walker would"

Obviously, that's why they got 5K and 20K votes statewide.

If you haven't noticed that passion Walker has brought to the job, and the return passion his overwhelming voter support has for him in a otherwise meaningless Republican primary, then your eyes are hopelessly wide shut, Bren.

Walker has passion for his career and for serving his benefactors. I am of course referring to passion for serving the people of Wisconsin.
"Eyes hopelessly wide shut" i believe refers more properly to people who are in denial about the facts of the Walker administration.

While this entire recall election is in uncharted territory, I do wonder what motivated people to take the time and effort to cast their primary vote for Walker? Normally, in an uncontested primary(in this case Republican) the total votes cast are 1/3 to 1/2 of the totals in the contested race(in this case Democrats).

Obviously Walker vote total in a primary he didnt really actively campaign for as he is running ads and running the State . Walker was going to be the obvious winner as it was the Democrats who had to decide on candidates. They used Millions of dollars in get out the vote efforts for yesterdays event. Walker did not .Yet Walker received 626,538 votes.
Clearly, everyone knows that total will go over 1 million when Repubs HAVE to show up on a day that matters. Clearly, Tuesdays results showed strength as all those votes will be cast again the same way in one month.
I think it will be another month of political battle . In the end . I truly Believe Scott Walker will beat Taxing Tom Barrett by a larger margin in the rematch . It will end Barretts state wide career and than he can than focus on CHOO CHOO trains and wasting money in Milwaukee.
Good article J.B.!

Walker recieved more votes than any other candidate in a Governor's primary has in over 65 years. I'd guess that says something.

Yes Greg , and that event way back happen to be voted on with a highly contested state wide Senate race which motivated voters. What Walker Achieved in a basically uncontested primary is unprecedented. Just to give some perspective . Obama had his Wisconsin Primary where he was running vs no one. His vote total was 275,281. Clearly, when Conservatives turn out 626,538 votes when Walker had only a token candidate opposing him proves he has all his base voting and many working for him.

Just because the conservatives didn't bang on drums, or skip work, or run away and hide like the Dems, doesn't mean we are not motivated, and yesterday has shown that the conservatives are more motivated to re-elect Walker than the unioncrats are to get rid of him.

The truth is, no matter how much the unioncrats want to spin this, this is still all about collective bargaining, and the fact is, most are happy with the changes in Act 10.

Now you unioncrats put all your eggs in the basket on a three time loser who has had no vision for the job he's had for the past eight years; and apparently has no vision or one idea for the one he wants. I think the beating he takes from Walker this time will be worse than the beating he took at State Fair Park.

But seriously, Barrett is an empty suit and until he actually says something of substance, I have no respect for him. Sorry if that offends you Lyle, but you've said some pretty hafe-filled things about me as well.

@Lyle, In case you forgot, Barrett shamelessly ran TV ads utilizing pictures of himself in the hospital to strike a sympathetic chord for himself. What would the point of that be? Vote for me because I got beat up? Now that, my friend, is what tacky is all about. But then again, he has nothing else to run on. So do you wanna bet he'll run those pics again?

The beating he took at State Fair is a good excuse for him to claim brain damage. He attacks Walker but subconsciously uses Walker's tools as his own.
I don't think it is hateful to remind people of Barrett's ass kicking(s).
I don't think it is tacky to say he will have his ass pounded yet again.
He might be one of them closet Liberals living a double life....

You see Lyle, Tom Barrett is everything opposite I stand for. I have devoted my life to helping others, never seeking anything from it but the personal satisfaction that I in someway made a difference. The world is made up of leaders, followers and those seeking fame.

I too, remember how he shamelessly used the only act of courage I can associate with him, to pat himself on the back for political gain. That is not only shameless, but turned what could have been a defining moment in his life, into a pathetic display of self-indulgence.

So to me, it neither tacky, nor hate-filled. It goes against the core of my being. You should know by now Lyle, that I don't put out one-liners without a deeper meaning behind it.

But if you want to talk about his record, please tell me or point to one thing in all of his political career where he was a leader. Just one thing. I've looked and can find nothing.

Leaders are take charge individuals who judge themselves based accomplishments, getting others to join their cause, and get people to believe in them. On our side, Walker is that leader. He inspires us. It is not just because he was anybody but Doyle. He had a plan; he executed it; calculated the reults; calculated the risks; and did it knowing that some people weren't going to be happy. He did it because he knew it was right and knew it would work. That is a leader. Barrett has none of those traits.

@Brian Dey...I won't question your altruism since it something no one else could possible know. As far as I'm concerned, I also don't care about your ideology. If the truth were to be told, I don't think it matters who wins the governor's race. My only desire is to see the Senate change majorities and the Democrats take control of that chamber. That will put a stop to the conservative steamroller.

I dont think anyone could argue with a straight face that Taxing Tom Barrett is a leader. He is a career politician and his only true goal in life appears to be to hold public office. He certainly has a terrible record in Milwaukee , but in far too many big cities they simply vote for the (D) - no matter what they do. Ignorance is bliss in Milwaukee. Far too many their are drinking from the public trough like Tom because they don't want a real job or the problems they inflict on their supporters.

Hurling insults at those you disagree with makes you look incredibly intelligent, Brian Dey. Did you learn those terms on TalkRadio, which could quite accurately be called HateRadio because it certainly bashes progressives far more than it uplifts conservatives, and has been proven to be appealing only to those with low IQs?
http://www.sodahead.com/united-states/new-study-reveals-that-stupidity-can-make-you-conservative-and-racist/question-2421029/

Tom Barrett took a beating at State Fair Park standing up for a common citizen. You use that within an insult? That shows your character. You would NEVER catch Scott Walker standing up for someone in a dangerous situation. It's beneath him. Tom Barrett also gave a young girl a ride to safety when she had car trouble on I-43 in the early 1990's. It wasn't the days of cell phones but he offered to go call for help or give her a ride to safety and didn't have to stop in traffic to help, but did. This kind of character who cares for human beings is the kind we need, not the kind who cares about his popularity and who is buying his caviar.
We don't need someone who thinks they are above their contituents.
If you do, then go for it. I'll agree to disagree with you, but I won't call you names or use positive references as a modifier to improve my argument for my politics.

We did, skinnyDUDE - he would stand up for you if you were in a dangerous situation. Your life is far more important than your tax bill. Or, maybe it's not.
Scott Walker's Legal Defense Fund spending may get him to avoid prosecution, but he is still a criminal. Most of the evidence is shredded but his activities while in Milwaukee were criminal. If crime causes a guy to reach the goals YOU want for our government, you might want to look in the mirror and ask yourself why you feel that way, several times a day, starting right now. Why do I think criminal behavior is good when it benefits me tax-wise? No citizen would ever have access to that kind of legal defense. It only takes money to hide crimes, but a criminal is a criminal whether caught and prosecuted or not, espcially in the conservative realm, where religion is typically a stronger code of ethics. God sees it all, my friend. You can run, but you cannot hide. Might as well run in circles, keep raising money, keep piling up the money, maybe it will help him get closer to heaven.... since he will need someplace to go in June. Tosa isn't going to be too friendly for him anymore and neither is Madison.
Those of you who vote based upon TAX SAVINGS may want to think about character. http://scottwalkerwatch.com/2012/05/02/walkers-legal-defense-funds-and-outside-wisconsin-billionaire-fatcats-prepare-for-recall-and-fbi-indictment/

Considering where taxes were at the time he cut them, Democrats wouldn't object. Being strong on defense is great -- just not at the expense of the other domestic issues. You guys don't get it -- all we want is a little balance here.

Balance to me means eliminating hundreds of domestic programs that either are not working, or are working contrary to their own stated purpose. An EPA that harshly penalizes business for spitting on the sidewalk, yet holds its nose (and shuts its eyes) when MMSD pumps billions of gallons of poo water into the lake comes to mind.
