Reminder to Remain Cognizant: Multiple Thefts Around Milwaukee

Remember to lock your doors at night and remain alert for unfamiliar individuals in your neighborhood.

A number of thefts — both armed and unarmed — were reported across the multiple patch platforms in the past seven days.

One occurred on the evening of Aug. 6 in Brookfield, where the assailant allegedly broke and entered into a 62-year old woman's home and . After tying her to the back of a chair, the robber stole numerous items, including the victim's car keys.

According to the , the thief — who was identified as a New Berlin teenager — entered the young woman's home using the same method as that employed in the Brookfield incident, through an open door.

In that same story, another young Tosa resident reported a stolen XBox 360 game console and a controller.

The robber successfully identified the location of the family's spare key outside the home, and carefully locked the door after exiting.

Remain Cognizant

Wauwatosa Patch's editor Jim Price speaks well at the end of his story, giving the reader a hypothetical situation detailing potential advice the police could — or should — have given the victim.

In echoing Mr. Price's sentiment, it's important to remember to remain on alert, even within the confines of one's own home.

It's understandable that people want to leave their doors open during the day when it's nice outside; however, when day turns to night, please remember to close and lock your doors.

Your valuables, and more importantly your own safety, may depend on it. Based on the above information, it's apparent that thieves know what to look for as access to your belongings and domicile. Don't make it easy on them by leaving doors open and hiding keys where crooks may find them.
