2013 National Encampment
On August 9 th through August 11 th of 2013 , the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War , the Auxiliary
to the SUVCW and the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic , will hold their
Annual Encampment ( conventions) at the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel . It is just off I 94 at

Milwaukee hosted the National GAR
Encampments of 1889, 1923, and 1943. 1937 was Madison’s turn. The
last National Encampment in Wisconsin was held in Milwaukee in 1943. About three dozen Civil War veterans
attended the Milwaukee 1943 national encampment, which was 78 years after Appomattox.
They included Albert Woolson of
Minnesota, who in 1956 became the last Union veteran to die
Three Bus Tours will precede the
Encampments on Thursday, August 8th:
a Milwaukee Civil War sites tour at 9:30 am , a visit to Sprecher Brewing
Company at 1 pm , and a tour of Milwaukee’s Soldiers Home, on the grounds of
the Zablocki VA Medical Center at 6 pm . Assemble in the Hotel lobby.

On Friday ,
August 9th , at 7 pm to 10 pm
, a Campfire & Courtesy Hour will take place . Within this time frame
members of the Mohican Nation based in Wisconsin will give a presentation to
honor their ancestors who served in the Civil War ( 1861 – 1865 ) . The name Mohican , comes from the word Muheconneok , which means “ from the waters

260 Camps (chapters ) within the United States with membership of about 6,500 .
