Dr. Seuss' Birthday Celebrates Reading for All Ages

Students from the Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha read Dr. Suess stories to young children, and one was joined Monday by Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto.

Irma Enciso said she "was pretty scared" reading along with Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto at Grandma's House Day Care in Brookfield on Monday.

It wasn't the mayor making her nervous, but the practice of speaking English after months of study.

Enciso, who is from Mexico and also spent time in Montreaux, Switzerland, is a student learning English as a second language through the Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha (LCGW). Chris Thuerk, a volunteer tutor, said students like Enciso find out that the best way to learn the language is through conversation.Β
