Perfect Timing: It's Severe Weather Awareness Week

The City of Brookfield, Waukesha County, and Wisconsin Emergency Management are promoting National Severe Weather Preparedness Week March 3-9.

With a changing winter forecast of storms and advisories on Monday and Tuesday, along with an erroneous tornado warning, the need for everyone to stay connected and aware of changing weather could not have been illustrated better.

During this week residents are asked to “Be a Force of Nature” and prepare for severe weather threats in our area, according to a release from the city. 

Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Severe Weather Preparedness Week is a nationwide effort to increase awareness of severe weather and to motivate individuals, families, businesses, and communities to take actions that will prepare them in the event of severe weather. 

The release went on to state that even with advance warning, individuals are killed or seriously injured every year by tornadoes and other types of severe weather. In 2012, there were more than 450 weather-related fatalities and nearly 2,600 injuries.

“The City of Brookfield is committed to ensuring the safety of our community and each of us can play an important role. By taking a few steps now, you can be better prepared and assist in saving lives,” said Brookfield Mayor Steven Ponto.

Officials are asking residents to know their risks, prepare and take action through a plan you arrange with your family before a severe weather situation occurs, and to be an example by sharing your story via social media.
