World Record Shave in Brookfield to Raise Funds for Childhood Cancer

A team of hair stylists is going to try to break a Guinness World Record for most heads shaved in an hour at the Brookfield Soccer Complex to help a young girl who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Volunteers are coming together in Brookfield to shave 400 heads. Yes, shave.

Three Whitnall High School alumni and a group of hair stylists are going to attempt to break a Guinness World Record for most heads shaved in an hour by a team. The current record is 318 heads shaved.

The event World Record Shave was inspired by 2-year-old Haven Anderson, who has been diagnosed with Stage IV neuroblastoma in the adrenal gland that has metastasized to her spinal cord and her chest.

Haven's mother, Erin, is a biology teacher at Chapparal High School in Denver. Organizers Kathryn Pluer of Greendale and Roots Salon owners Shannon Lopez and Naomi Prusinski are longtime friends with Erin. All four women graduated from Whitnall High School in 1995.

“We’ve known Erin for over 20 years,” Pluer said. “It was really difficult for all of us because they live in Denver and because we couldn’t do the things a friend could do if we lived next door in the same neighborhood. We wanted to do something here in Wisconsin for all the people who know and love Erin.”

Twenty-two teachers and staff at Erin’s school shaved their heads in the first Shavin' for Haven, which raised more than $22,000. Shortly after Haven was diagnosed in April her father lost his job, according to a 9News report.

Seeking brave volunteers

The group’s goal is to find “the 400 Brave” in the Milwaukee area to come out and "be brave and shave for a cure" at the Brookfield Soccer Complex, 19485 W. Lisbon Rd., at 2 p.m. Oct. 21. The 10 volunteer stylists will need to shave 40 heads in an hour to break the record.

People can register for $25 at www.worldrecordshave.com. An official world record shave t-shirt is included. Half of the proceeds raised will go to Haven and the other half will go to CureSearch.

CureSearch for Children's Cancer is a national non-profit foundation whose mission is to fund and support children's cancer research and provide information and resources to all those affected by children's cancer.

Pluer said CureSearh had been really helpful to Haven and her family.

“If we’re going to make this an event that’s going to reach a lot of people lets make it a bigger cause,” Pluer said.
