Operatic Twist on The Billy Goats Gruff

The Florentine Opera performed the popular children's play about bullying and kindness, adapting lyrics to the music of Mozart, Donizetti and Rossini. The free show at the Brookfield Public Library ended National Library Week.

Families packed the community room at the Saturday for a free 45-minute adaption of The Billy Goats Gruff by the Florentine Opera.

Baritone Scott Johnson of Madison played the bully billy goat Osmin, who wouldn't let other goats cross his bridge to get home after school. The three billy goat friends were performed by mezzo soprano Julia Hardin of Lawrence, Kansas; Matthew Richardson of Dubuque, Iowa; and soprano Erica Schuller of Milwaukee.

After the performance, the singers answered questions from children and parents, many of which centered on the actors' costumes, wigs and goat horns. The show closed a string of events at the Brookfield Public Library during National Library Week.
