Students May Face Breathalyzer Tests at Elmbrook

Proposed policy would allow administrators to administer the tests at sporting events or other school activities.

Update: Patch heard from school officials after the board meeting, who called the policy a "deterrent" for students. Learn more.

Elmbrook School District students may face Breathalyzer tests under a proposed policy being discussed by board members Tuesday night.

The board is scheduled to hear a first reading of the policy at a 7:15 p.m. meeting.

The policy, posted on the school district's website, is said to "ensure the safety of students at district functions."

Administrator could ask students to submit to a Breathalyzer test at school-sponsored events such as prom, homecoming or sporting events, according to the policy. The policy also could apply during the school day. Students who refuse or test positive will be asked to leave immediately with their parent or guardian.

Editor's note: The original version of this story incorrectly state that the tests would be randomly conducted. The policy states they would only be conducted if there was reasonable suspicion a student had been drinking.
