Milwaukee Foodie News: New Tosa Qdoba and Return of Pizza Man

Rising from the ashes, Pizza Man is better than ever...and, oh yeah, Tosa is getting a new Qdoba.

If you love food and exploring new places to eat, or want to find out what eateries are coming and going, we have latest restaurant and other "foodie" news from throughout the Milwaukee area.  Here's a look at what's new on the local food, restaurant and bar scene.

Pizza Man is Back — and Better Than Ever

The Pizza Man restaurant on the East Side has risen from the ashes after being destroyed in a fire in January 2010. And, according to the Journal Sentinel's Kathy Flanigan, the new restaurant outshines the old one in just about every way. Pizza Man, now located at 2597 N. Downer Ave., doesn't open until next month, but Flanigan dined at a "soft opening" and was impressed. The food was as good as always, but the new restaurant holds more than four times as many diners and is brighter than before, Flanigan noted.

Tosa's Newest Restaurant Has Familiar Name

The restaurants keep popping up in Wauwatosa, and the latest addition is Qdoba Mexican Grill, which will open Tuesday in the city's Village area. Granted, this is not as exciting as the new Bel Air Cantina or Rocket Baby Bakery, but the regional manager tells Patch that Tosa residents seem enthused about the eatery. Read more on Wauwatosa Patch.

Third Ward Restaurant Unveils Dinner Menu

Patch had a chance to experience some authentic South American food as the  Kasana Café, 241 N. Broadway, unveiled its new dinner menu last week. The Third Ward restaurant, which emphasizes Argentinean and Brazilian food with a twist, had previously only offered breakfast, brunch and lunch. Along with the new menu, Kasana is also launching Ana’s Table, a six-course meal with wine pairings. The new menu includes the Kasana Burger, a slider filled with dates, walnuts and parmesan cheese; Bolinhos de Bacalhau, cod and potato fritters with a roasted garlic-Dijon sauce that packed a punch; Vatapa, a rich dish featuring tender chicken breast in a creamy coconut milk sauce; and Tiramisu, which was topped off with a caramelized rose petal, an elegant touch to chef Ana’s signature dessert. Kasana has an emphasis on local food, drinks were made with alcohol from Milwaukee’s Great Lakes Distillery and the menu featured charcuterie from Bolzano Artisan Meats.

New Brew Pub Coming to Bay View

The District 14 Brewery and Pub will open in September or October on South Howell Avenue in Bay View, OnMilwaukee.com is reporting. Owner Matthew McCullough says he will make beer on the premises but doesn't plan to distribute it elsewhere. As he told OnMilwaukee: "Instead of trying to schlep kegs and bottles of beer all over the country or even all over the state, I will be selling it a glass at a time."

Mama DeMarinis Staging a Comeback

Elsewhere in Bay View, the decades-old Mama DeMarinis restaurant that closed last summer is going to reopen in another location, the Journal Sentinel reports. Little DeMarinis will open in the George Washington Bay View Post 180 of the American Legion, at 2860 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., the newspaper said. The owners say the recipes will be the same ones used at Mama DeMarinis at 2457 S. Wentworth Ave.

Our 297th Frozen Yogurt Shop Update

Of course, it seems that a week can't go by without your foodie reporter giving you an update on the various frozen yogurt shops opening in the metro area. Just in case you're wondering, two shops planned for Menomonee Falls are still coming, but it's taking a bit longer than anticipated to open them. Yo Cool Yogurt now plans to open in late August, while Smart Cow now says it won't be serving the creamy delights until late September or early October. When the two businesses do open — hopefully before it starts snowing — you can bet you'll read about it here. For more of an update, check out Menomonee Falls Patch.
