When Yo Mama! opened its doors to the public for the first time in Brookfield at 11 a.m. Thursday, a group of kids had already been waiting outside for 30 minutes. Thanks to their 10-month-old Wauwatosa location, the frozen yogurt store comes to Brookfield with a loyal fan base that kept the place busy Thursday and bodes well for the store's future in the Ruby Isle Shopping Center at 2205 N. Calhoun Rd.
"We're obsessed," Andie Catterson, who went to Yo Mama! Thursday with a group of friends, said.
"Yo Mama's is my safe haven of yummy goodness!" reads a crayon-drawn sign on the wall.
Yo Mama! owner Becky Berger, who lives in Brookfield with her family, said she originally wanted to start her business in Brookfield, but could not find an ideal location before they heard about one in Wauwatosa. She said she when she found the opening in Ruby Isle.
"When this opened up, we knew this would be perfect," Berger said of the Ruby Isle spot. "It's at the center of the community. We're so excited to be part of Brookfield."
The store is bigger than the Wauwatosa location, with two more frozen yogurt machines (meaning four extra flavors), and a greater selection of toppings. A steady flow of customers from Brookfield and beyond created their own towers of frozen yogurt Thursday, taking it to go, joining friends and family, or working on laptops at spacious booths and tables.
"It provides a place for families to come and hang out," Berger said. "I heard a lot of feedback that that was lacking in Brookfield. There aren't many places to do that."
Berger is also finalizing plans for an outdoor patio next to the store where there is a drive-thru lane that was used by former tenant . The patio was in March.
With demolition starting as early as next week, she said the patio should be done for summer. Berger said she abandoned original plans for an outdoor fireplace, but she is considering adding a water feature. The patio will have cement block garden walls with built-in benches and seating for about 30 people.
