Community Honors Fallen Vets with Memorial Day Events

Numerous ceremonies planned in Brookfield, Elm Grove to remember and honor those who served our country.

Monday is Memorial Day and there are plenty of events to not only celebrate a day off work with family and friends but also honor those who served in our nation's military and for some, gave the ultimate sacrifice during war time. 

Here is a rundown of events planned for the long weekend:

Saturday

11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: , 13235 W. Capitol Dr. — Newsradio 620 WTMJ will be broadcasting live from the grounds. There will be free hamburgers and 1,500 flags flown in the Avenue of the Flags. The Great Memorial Building also will be open for tours.

Sunday

9:30 a.m.: Wisconsin Memorial Park, 13235 W. Capitol Dr. — Marine Corps League Memorial Service in Garden of Eternal Life. 

10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Wisconsin Memorial Park, 13235 W. Capitol Dr. — Newsradio 620 WTMJ will be broadcasting live from the grounds. There will be free hamburgers and 1,500 flags flown in the Avenue of the Flags. The Great Memorial Building also will be open for tours.

Monday

7:30 to 10 a.m.: Elm Grove Woman's Club clubhouse, 13885 Watertown Plank Road, Elm Grove — . A beautiful 18-inch strand of pearls, from an anonymous donor, will be raffled off at 10 a.m.

Tickets for the breakfast are $6 for adults and $4 for children at the door, or $5 for adults if purchased in advance at Well-Bred Bargains, 890 Elm Grove Road.

8:30 a.m.: American Legion Stenz-Griesell-Smith Post 449, 3245 N. 124th St. — Veterans who wish to ride in the Elm Grove parade should meet at the Post at 8:30 a.m. Car number assignments will be provided.

9 a.m.: Visitation Cemetery, south side of Watertown Plank Road, just east of O’Donoghue’s Irish Pub in Elm Grove — American Legion Stenz-Griesell-Smith Post 449 to hold special graveside services honoring a veteran/Legionnaire. 

10 a.m.: Calvary Cemetery, 5503 W. Blue Mound Road — The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will sponsor an outdoor Civil War Sesquicentennial Mass with Archbishop Jerome Listecki, Lt. Col. USAR (ret.).

The 1st Brigade Band will play Civil War musical instruments and Cushing's Battery will conduct a cannon salute with the archbishop firing the cannon. In inclement weather, the events will be held inside the church across from the cemetery. 

10 a.m.: Oak Hill Cemetery, 3598 N. Brookfield Road, south of Capitol Dr. — Behling-Kutchera American Legion Post 296 of Brookfield will hold ceremony at the gravesite of Revolutionary War soldier Nathan Hatch. 

10 to 11 a.m.: Wisconsin Memorial Park, 13235 W. Capitol Dr. — 5th District VFW Memorial Service. Procession of VFW Veterans, Boy and Cub Scout troops and Civil Air Patrol in front of Great Memorial Building. 

10:30 a.m.: Village Park — start of Memorial Day parade in Elm Grove. Sponsored by the Elm Grove Junior Guild. Sunset Playhouse to hand out T-shirts and donuts to those who meet at the playhouse's parking lot from 8:30 to 9 a.m.

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Sendik's parking lot, 3425 W. Watertown Plank Road — Memorial Day Parade Party with live music, food and entertainment.

11:30 to 11:45 a.m.: Wisconsin Memorial Park, 13235 W. Capitol Dr. — Annunciation Greek Orthodox Memorial Service at Great Memorial Building, Chapel of the Chimes.

Noon to 2 p.m.: Wisconsin Memorial Park, 13235 W. Capitol Dr. — Memorial Day Musical Tribute with Brookfield Civic Chorus (noon to 1 p.m.) and Knight Wind Ensemble (1 to2 p.m.)

Noon to 5:30 p.m.: American Legion Stenz-Griesell-Smith Post 449, 3245 N. 124th St.,  262-781-0488 — "Open House at the Post." One More Time Band plays from noon to 2 p.m. and Boomers plays from 2 to 5:30 p.m.
