Concealed Carry Debate; Last Hurrah for Concerts, Pool, Beach

Also on tap this week are Town Truck Day, discussions about filling an open aldermanic spot, a varsity swim meet and library ice cream social.

Summer's winding down, as the city wraps up its summer concert series this week and the city pool and county park beach close on Sunday. Here's a glimpse into what's coming up in Brookfield news, sports and events: 

News

Park and recreation plans: Curious which greenway trails or park improvements are planned for next year? The Park and Recreation Commission will review its 2012 capital improvement plan and budget at its meeting 7 p.m. Monday at , 2000 N. Calhoun Road.

U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson staffers: Want to talk about a federal issue or concert? Staff members for U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson will be at Brookfield City Hall from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Concealed carry in city buildings: The city's Legislative and Licensing Committee will discuss as a restriction on the state's concealed carry law. The committee meeting, open to the public, starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Filling vacant aldermanic seat: The Legislative committee also may decide how to handle the opening created when post.

Should more homes be built by Shire, landfill? A landfill moratorium committee will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall. The committee will review groundwater test data and other information to help determine whether the city should lift a moratorium on further development in the Shire subdivision off Brookfield Road.

Sports

Swim meet: The Lancers girls varsity swim team will compete in an at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Wauwatosa West High School. Competing teams include Badger-Lake Geneva, Brookfield Central, Cedarburg, Divine Savior Holy Angels, Franklin, Hartford Union, Menomonee Falls, New Berlin West, Pius XI, Waukesha West and Wauwatosa East.

Events

Bluegrass and ice cream social: Everyone's invited to enjoy some food, ice cream and bluegrass music by the Burie Family at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the courtyard of the , 1900 N. Calhoun Road. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Brookfield Public Library.

Final Civic Plaza noon and evening concerts: This is it, the last chance to enjoy the city's free outdoor summer concerts. From noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday Downtown Harrison will perform in the Civic Plaza between the  and the , 2100 N. Calhoun Road. And from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. North Coast Orchestra will entertain the crowd at the plaza. 

Town Truck Day will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Marx Park, 700 S. Barker Road. Kids of all ages get a chance to check out the inside of fire engines, police cars and snowplow trucks. Come see how workers attach the big snow plows.

Brookfield Farmers' Market: The  is held from 7:30 a.m. to noon every Saturday through October, attracting about 4,000 people weekly. It's held in the Civic Plaza next to , 2000 N. Calhoun Road.

Last day of the pool and beach: Sunday is the final day for the Wirth Aquatic Center and Fox Brook Park. So get your pool on from 1 to 8 p.m. at  2585 N. Pilgrim Road, and your beach on from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at , 2925 N. Barker Road.
