Week in Review: Mayor Calls Town's Move A 'Bribe'

This week's news included increased efforts by the Town of Brookfield to protect its tax base by offering to waive bills to commercial property owners who sign 20-year non-annexation agreements.

The battle of the Brookfields was rekindled this week as the town pushed to protect its borders by .

In exchange, the town offered to waive special assessments for a proposed new water tower — assessments that for some property owners could cost tens of thousands of dollars. Over in the city, Mayor Steve Ponto called the move a "bribe," and aldermen voted to express their willingness to annex virtually the entire town rather than see it incorporate as a village.
