Week in Review: Von Maur, State Budget Dominate News

Local officials scramble to learn impact of state budget, and city mayor says a major town project anchored by Von Maur could hurt Brookfield Square mall.

The Wisconsin 14 were not in Madison last week as Gov. Scott Walker unveiled his 2011-13 state budget. And on Saturday as thousands of protestors marched again outside the state Capitol, there appeared to be no resolution to persuade the 14 Democratic senators back to the chambers so a vote could be taken on Walker's controversial budget repair bill. 

Back in Brookfield, the town was front-page news, as the Marcus Corp. unveiled plans to redevelop nearly 20 acres at the high-profile I-94 exit at Barker Road.

Wednesday: Buckle up, Brookfield. It's going to be a rocky road from now until July. from Highway 16 to 124 Street in Waukesha County and from 70th to 32nd streets in Milwaukee County. Expect the interstate to narrow from three lanes to two until Summerfest. 

Thursday: Ready to shop for more name-brand shoes and accessories? at the I-94 exit at Barker Road. But the major project - and a state bill that would give the Town of Brookfield power to use an economic development tool not granted to towns - drew objections from neighboring city leaders who feared it would hurt Brookfield Square mall.  

Friday: Want some rum in your movie-theater Coke? The Majestic Cinema plans to expand its - to more screens. Town leaders say there have been no problems with the sales of beer and liquor at the movies. Extra, extra: cute at Hillside Elementary, a surprise for students as part of a reading contest.

Saturday: In the WIAA boys basketball regional playoffs, theteam forced the No. 3 seed Marquette Hilltoppers into OT before coming up short, 51-46. The season also ended for , which  fell, 64-57, to No. 4 seed Milwaukee Washington.
