Three BCHS Students advance to State National History Day Competition
For the second year in a row, the documentary team of Brookfield Central senior Natalie Mathes and junior Hayley Gray-Hoehn will be taking their National History Day project to the state competition. They will be joined by junior Yi Jiang who, as a first-time entrant, placed at the top in the Website category. The girls will compete in the State event on May 5 as a result of their placement at Regional Competition which was held on March 3. This year’s National History Day theme is “Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History” and students were to choose their own topic on that theme as well as the category in which they wished to present it.  Mathes and Gray-Hoehn did a documentary film entitled “We are Women, Hear Us Roar.” Their focus was on the revolutionary 1968 Dagenham Ford strike and the subsequent Equal Pay Act.  The duo interviewed two of the surviving strikers in England as well as a University of Essex professor all of whom gave them primary source information on their topic.  Jiang’s entry was entitled “Impression — Painting a Revolution.”  The website she designed reflected her background in French and her interest in historical research. Advisor for the BCHS National History Day students is social studies teacher Christopher McBride.

WHMS Collects "Moola" to Help Honduras
Helping hands got to work during the week of March 19th at WHMS. Spanish classes, under the direction of Mrs. Holt and Ms. Babcock, organized an all school fundraiser to support AthleticCo Medical Brigade which helps impoverished villages in Honduras. They worked with the Social Studies teachers at all grade levels to educate WHMS students about the Brigade and asked for the student’s help in collecting gently used eye glasses and spare change in an effort to purchase a cow for one of the needy villages or orphanages. There was a contest between grades to see who could raise the most "moola" for the cow purchase; the winner got the honor of naming the cow. The AthleticCo Medical Brigade is leaving for Honduras on April 14th. We are happy to report that WHMS students raised $986.54! This is enough to purchase not one, but TWO cows for the people of Honduras. Sixth and seventh grade both won the challenge and will each get to name a cow. The students also collected many pairs of gently used reading/prescription glasses to send along with the volunteers to Honduras. We are very proud of our WHMS students and their generosity in helping others.
