Milwaukee Art Museum Features Outstanding Student Artwork
The scholastic Art Awards, a Wisconsin competition and exhibition, is the regional section of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards national program conducted nationally by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, Inc., and is the major completion for students in grades 7-12. The exhibition is on view at the Milwaukee Art Museum Feb. 4th – March 4. Gold and Silver Key winning artworks are exhibited in the Schroeder West Galleria & Pieper Education Gallery. There were a total of 1,497 entries in the competition, of which 270 were awarded individual Gold Keys, and will be sent to the National competition after the exhibition. Brookfield East High School entered 20 student works of art. Of these works, several took top honors. Amanda Bohl, sophomore, won both a Gold Key and the prestigious American Vision Award, an exceptional honor. Ronnie Smith, senior, and Cathy Liu, freshman, also took home Gold Key honors along with Angela Verish, junior, who had one piece selected as a Gold Key, two as Silver Key and two as Honorable Mention. In addition, Amanda Walhab, sophomore, received an Honorable Mention for her artwork. All of the above students have received great honors by being recognized by the scholastic art committee.

Robotics News
The B'East Robotics season is underway and the team (FIRST Team 2202) is working hard to build a robot to meet this year's challenge — Rebound RumbleSM. The game is played between two Alliances of three teams each. Each Alliance competes by trying to score as many basketballs in the hoops as possible during the 2-minute and 15-second match. Balls scored in higher hoops score Alliances more points. Alliances are awarded bonus points if they are balanced on bridges at the end of the match. In matches where opponent Alliances work together to balance on the white bridge, all participating teams earn additional valuable seeding points. We have six weeks from the beginning of January to mid-February to complete the robot, so the team is very busy.  Check out what we have been up to at www.beastrobotics.com/category/blog/.To see a video of this year's challenge go to www.youtube.com/user/FRCTeamsGlobal.

Latin Students Excel at State Convention

The Latin 4/5 certamen team of Jennifer Vosters, Sarah Pritchard, Christian Kreznar and Advik Shreekumar placed third overall. Seniors Elaine Andersen, Jennifer Vosters, Everett Frisch, Max Kasun, and Advik Shreekumar received $100 scholarships from the WJCL.

PILGRIM PARK MIDDLE SCHOOL

PPMS Community Supports Kerwin Hackett Fund established at US Bank, Community Donations Being Accepted
The Pilgrim Park Middle School community has come together over the last few weeks in support of Kerwin Hackett, an 8th grade student who was injured in a skiing accident while visiting relatives in Korea over the holidays. The Hackett family has continuously been communicating with Pilgrim Park about Kerwin’s condition. Kerwin, who is being cared for in Seoul, Korea, is improving but is still in an unconscious state. His parents have been with him since the accident, although they plan to return home with Kerwin as soon as he is able to travel.

The Pilgrim Park and Elmbrook Schools community has been incredibly supportive of Kerwin, and many have contributed financial support to assist the family with medical bills and loss of income while they remain in Korea. To that end, a Kerwin Hackett Fund has been established through US Bank. Money raised by students, including a significant donation by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, has been deposited into this account and will be provided to the family upon their return home. If any family, individual, or group is interested in making a donation to the Kerwin Hackett Fund, they may stop in at any US Bank location and inform the teller they would like to donate to the Kerwin Hackett Fund. Tax deductible receipts are available.

BROOKFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Artist Michelle Stitzlien Visits Brookfield Elementary Feb. 7 - 10
Brookfield Elementary families have been cap collecting for over a year! Finally all the caps will be made into a work of art, a Bottle Cap Mural.
Mrs. Stitzlien will begin her visit with an all school assembly on Feb. 7th at 9 a.m. She will share pictures and information about her sculptures made with recycled materials. Each class will meet and work with Mrs. Stitzlein. She will help us create the drawing below into a bottle cap mural. This drawing has been enlarged onto plywood boards. The caps will be placed on the plywood in a mosaic style. Students will be drilling screws into the caps to secure them. Mrs. Stitzlien will teach us tool safety and how to properly use the drill. Many parent volunteers that will be in the art room helping students create this awesome work of art!
The birds, butterflies and flowers were drawn by B.E. artists! Visit Michelle Stitzlien’s website for more information and examples of her art, http://www.artgrange.com.

BURLIEGH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Chinese Acrobats to Visit
Burleigh is excited to welcome a team of Chinese acrobats to entertain and educate our students. Four acrobats and an interpreter will present us with facts about Chinese culture, customs and school life. This presentation is guaranteed to provide us with unforgettable, breathtaking experience. The art of Chinese acrobatics combines immense athletic strength, impeccable balance and timing along with Asian philosophy of inner strength, which focuses the body and mind to work in perfect harmony. Each individual acrobat's physical and philosophical strength combines with that of the fellow members the troupe in magnificent displays of balancing, juggling, dance, comedy and magic. We look forward to this exciting performance on Feb. 21, 2012 at 9:30 am in our large gym.

SWANSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

What’s Happening in 5th Grade
Mr. Marinello's fifth-grade class began their Forensics Unit. No, not the forensics associated with the TV show C.S.I., but the type where students memorize a piece of writing and perform it in front of their parents and the other fifth-grade classes. Mr. M.'s students feel very empowered by this experience each year, especially in the area of speaking in front of a large group (one of the top three phobias of adult Americans).
