SCHOOL DISTRICT OF ELMBROOK

Kindergarten Open Houses Jan. 31 
Kindergarten Open Houses will be held at Brookfield Elementary, Burleigh, Dixon, Swanson and Tonawanda on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 6:15 p.m. Families with children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2012 will receive a packet of information by mid-January with their school assignment, an invitation to the open house and registration materials. If you have a Kindergarten-eligible child and do not receive a packet in the mail by mid-January, please contact your elementary school or Elmbrook's Communications Department at 262-783-2960. 

Summer School Information
Elmbrook Summer School will begin on Monday, June 18, 2012. The K-8 session will be held at Pilgrim Park Middle School and runs through July 13, with no student attendance on July 4. The High School session will be held at Brookfield East High School and runs through July 20. Registration materials will be posted at www.elmbrookschools.org/summerschool during the week of Feb. 20. Registration is by mail only and materials must be postmarked between the dates of March 10 and March 30, 2012.

Parent Network Coffee Feb. 1

Parent Network "Race to Nowhere" Showings Feb. 9 and 15
Save the Date! Showings of "Race to Nowhere" — a nationally-acclaimed documentary regarding pressures on high school students, is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 9, 7 p.m. at Brookfield East in the Black Box Theater; and Wednesday, Feb. 15, 7 p.m. in the Brookfield Central cafeteria. Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) in the Elmbrook School District Wednesday, Feb. 1, 9-11 a.m. Dixon Elementary School, Brookfield. Rescheduled due to snow! New date 2/1/12. Please join us as we listen to a presentation on Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) in the schools. CPI works hand in hand with Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) to provide proven non-violent strategies for educators to safely and effectively respond to anxious, hostile or violent behavior while balancing the responsibilities of care. Special Ed Parent Advisory Board — Dr. Skoning Inclusion Presentation Feb. 9 
Attention all parents and staff! Please join us for an evening with Dr. Stacey Skoning on Thursday, Feb. 9, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Elmbrook Schools Central Administrative Office. Dr Skoning is an Associate Professor of Special Education at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. She is an expert at developing new teaching methods and strategies that better support all students (from gifted to special education) within the general education setting. Cool Stuff for Kids Opportunity Fair Feb. 11
Looking for something for your kids and teens to do instead of watching TV and complaining of boredom? Come to the PAGE (Parent Advocates for Gifted Education) 8th Annual Cool Stuff for Kids Opportunity Fair! The event is Saturday, Feb. 11, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Marquette University Engineering Hall, 1637 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee. It's a free event to connect you with organizations that offer enrichment classes, programs, camps, and activities during the summer and/or throughout the year for children preschool through high school. Any and all families are welcome to attend!

Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program
The Distinguished Young Women of Brookfield and Elm Grove Scholarship Programs were held Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at Wisconsin Hills Middle School. Sixteen high school junior girls from Brookfield Central High School, Brookfield East High School and University High School participated in the event. Scholarships were awarded in five competitive categories for each program: Interview (25%), Scholastics (20%), Talent (25%), Fitness (15%) and Self Expression (15%). Award money was raised by the girls themselves, totaling nearly $5000. At the end of the evening, Abbie Taylor of Brookfield and Elizabeth Bodalski of Elm Grove were selected as the Distinguished Young Women. Each will advance to the state competition held in the Franklin area in August. College Recruiting Simplified
Brookfield Central High School is proud to announce that we have partnered with the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) to present a "College Recruiting Simplified" presentation on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. Brookfield Central High School is one of over 2,000 "College Recruiting Simplified" locations for the 2011-2012 school year. NCSA Educational Speaker, Dave Carl, will guide parents and student-athletes through the importance of establishing athletic and academic goals, setting realistic expectations and seeking opportunities at all college levels. Topics covered include: The benefits of playing collegiate sports; Understanding whether your student-athlete is really being recruited; Strategies on how to maximize an athlete's recruiting potential; Is Division I the only option?; Timelines for college recruiting; The importance of character and keeping good grades; The 5 things every potential college recruit must do to get recruited. Brookfield Central’s DECA Team Qualifies 5 for State Conference
Brookfield Central DECA attended the District Career Development Conference at Kettle Moraine High School on Saturday, Jan. 14. The seven Central representatives competed against over 700 students representing 31 high schools from Southeastern Wisconsin. Central left the competition with 5 qualifiers for the State Career Development Conference to be held in Lake Geneva in March. Representing Brookfield Central will be Matt Haralson, Aaron Davis, Rebekah Fetzer, Laura Wilk and Emma Knetter.

Poetry Outloud Results
Congratulations to the winners of the BCHS 4th Annual Poetry Out Loud Competition held in the Black Box Theater on Jan. 10. First place went to Hayley Gray-Hoehn, Tim Garvey placed second, and Grace Riggert is our alternate. Congratulations to all of the following students for taking the microphone: Husna Khan; Robin Miller; Paul Revord; Christina Lindop; Jessica Foley; Jessica Liban; Austin Kieler; Aaron Dolinski; Andrew Kallie; Amanda Houchens; Lindsay Shanks; and Steven Porter.

Latin Students Excel on National Etymology Exam
Twelve BEHS Latin students earned medals on the 2011 National Classical Etymology Exam. Students were tested on their knowledge of Greek and Latin derivatives via an on-line exam in November. The exam is sponsored by the National Junior Classical League and the American Classical League. The advanced level winners (grades 11 and 12) were: Gold Medal: Aditya Trivedi and Advik Shreekumar; Silver Medal: Caitlin Van Lith, Max Kasun, Natalie Gehred; Bronze Medal: Conor Leigh, Maria Gehred. The lower grade level winners (grade 9 and 10) were:Gold Medal: Robert Lennon, Mihir Trivedi, Mai-Lien Dombroe; Silver Medal: Cheyenne Fischer; Bronze Medal: Akshaya Trivedi.
