Special Christmas Worship Service

Special Christmas Worship Planned for Those

Who Are Grieving During the Holidays

The holidays can be especially difficult for those who are grieving, whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a job, a home or a dream. So to accommodate those who would like to acknowledge the birth of Jesus but aren’t feeling terribly “merry” this year, Community United Methodist Church in Elm Grove offers the “Service of the Longest Night” on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 4 p.m. The church is at 14700 Watertown Plank Rd.

“Named for its proximity to the winter solstice (the longest night of the year), the “Service of the Longest Night” is sensitive Christmas worship that combines prayer, scripture, meditation and music to express the true meaning of Christmas,” said Pastor Janet Hartzell, who will officiate at the service along with Judy Foster, a congregation member who leads the church’s grief classes. At the conclusion of the approximately 45-minute-long service, worshippers may light candles in honor or memory of loved ones, and then attend a reception hosted by Stephen Ministers from the congregation. (Stephen Ministers are laypersons who are trained to provide listening and care for people in times of special need.)

Anyone is welcome to attend the “Service of the Longest Night.” No reservations are necessary, and no offering is taken.
