Nearly 250,000 Wisconsin students have vision problems that affect their ability to learn. Surprisingly, not all of those issues are tied to 20/20 vision.
According to the American Optometric Association, 1 in 4 children has a vision problem that affects learning. In Wisconsin, based on 2010 enrollment figures, that's nearly 250,000 students.
What's surprising about that number is that many of those vision issues are not tied to visual acuity, or 20/20 vision. It includes many undetected vision problems that can affect a student's ability to read and learn.
These vision problems can result in learning issues that are often frustrating and difficult to diagnose. A child may lose their place while reading, have headaches, reverse letters and numbers, and perform below his or her potential.
