St. John Vianney Implements Cutting-Edge Reading Program

St. John Vianney students dive into reading with the school's new reading and language arts program.

St. John Vianney Catholic School (SJV) instituted a new reading and language arts program last year that is already producing positive results. With the addition of a full-time reading teacher and a part-time learning resource teacher, SJV’s new Houghton Mifflin Journeys reading program is in full swing this year.

That’s good news for students and parents alike since Wisconsin students fared poorly in the U.S. Department of Education’s 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress tests. The tests, administered to public school students, found that two-thirds of tested students in the state couldn’t read proficiently. The Journeys program challenges students at all reading levels, proving instruction based on children’s individual skills, making progress possible for students reading at all skill levels.

An online component of the program, accessible to teachers and families, augments the classroom lessons and can be tailored to the meet needs of individual students.
