Anti-Dump Signs Stolen from Apartment Complex

Signs opposing quarry lake dump-site disappeared overnight, and both the city and the property manager say they didn't remove them.

A resident of an apartment complex in the 13200 block of West Burleigh Road reported the morning of July 29 that overnight 10 anti-dump signs had been stolen from the grounds.

The signs say “B.R.A.D.,” which stands for Brookfield Residents Against the Dump, and give the Internet address www.nobrookfielddump.com.

The caller valued the signs at $22 apiece. They were all posted on the apartment complex property, he said.

Police checked and found that the signs had not been removed by the city or by apartment management, and at last report they had no clue to who might have taken away the signs.

Brookfield Residents Against the Dump is a group of citizens organized to protest a contractor's proposal to use a former quarry at North 135th Street and West Burleigh Road as a dump for construction waste from the Zoo Interchange and other road projects.

The quarry lake is proposed because of its proximity to the Zoo Interchange construction area, making it cheaper to haul there.

But many residents do not want the dump truck traffic in their neighborhoods for a projected seven years, and do not want to see the quarry lake filled at any rate. B.R.A.D. members say they support a park and residential development at the location.

Among bullet points on the B.R.A.D. website:

  • The proposed dump project will last seven years;
  • The project will require 350,000 to 400,000 dump truck trips;
  • This operation will run dump trucks 12 hours per day, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday;
  • There will be 200 dump truck trips per day;
  • There will be 16 dump truck trips per hour, or 1 dump truck every 4 minutes.
