UPDATE: Man Accidentally Shoots Self After Seeing Strangers in Yard

A meal service delivery worker found a 75-year-old man bleeding from a gunshot wound hours after he apparently accidentally shot himself, police say.

Updated (4:03 p.m.): A 75-year-old Brookfield man remains hospitalized after apparently accidentally shooting himself in the leg with a gun he grabbed after seeing two strangers in his backyard Wednesday morning, police say.

The man is expected to survive the non-life-threatening wound, Police Capt. Jim Adlam said. 

About 7 a.m. the man became concerned when he saw two people in the backyard of his home in the 3900 block of N. 165th St. just south of Capitol Drive, according to a release by Police Lt. John Beth.

The man, whose identity was not immediately released, obtained a handgun and "was carrying it around and it accidentally went off and he shot himself in the leg," Adlam said. 

The man lives alone and was not able to call for help. He remained on the floor until being discovered by a meal delivery service about 1:30 p.m. He had lost a large amount of blood but was conscious when Brookfield police and fire officials arrived.

"He was conscious and talking," Adlam said. "He's probably a little embarrassed."

Brookfield paramedics took him to where he was being treated.

Adlam said there was no information about any trespassers or attempted burglaries in the area, and the Brookfield case was not like the incident Saturday in which an .
