Brookfield Man Charged in Alleged Drive-By Shooting

A Brookfield man, 19, told police the shooter forced him at gunpoint to drive him to the residence, but the shooter told police they got the gun from the Brookfield man's home, charges allege.

A Brookfield man who told police he was an unwilling participant in a drive-by shooting in Milwaukee may have been more involved in the plan, according to a criminal complaint.

A Wauwatosa man who police say confessed to shooting a house after being kicked out of a party there said the drive-by was the Brookfield man's idea and the gun was taken from the Brookfield man's home, a complaint alleges.

Rahul K. Singh, 19, of Brookfield, was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Saturday with one count of endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon from a vehicle — the same charge that was filed Tuesday against Ryan Baltz, 21, of Wauwatosa. Conviction of the charge carries a maximum penalty of 12 ½ years in prison and $25,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

Singh drove Baltz to a party on May 13 in the 4800 block of N. 70th Street. After Baltz got kicked out of the party for fighting, Baltz went back while riding as a passenger in Singh’s van.

A woman living at the house and her children witnessed the shooting and recognized the van as Singh’s, but couldn’t tell who the shooter was.

Singh was later arrested in Brookfield for operating while intoxicated and was bailed out by Baltz’s mother.

Singh told police Baltz shot up the house and Singh only went back there after Baltz pointed a gun at Singh and forced him to return.

Baltz confessed to Milwaukee police that he did the shooting, but he told officers that the gun was obtained from Singh’s home and the shooting was Singh’s idea. He also showed investigators Facebook messages Singh had sent about hanging out and also told them Singh hid the gun after the shooting.

Investigators then had Baltz make a recorded phone call to Singh and tell him the police were looking for the gun, so he needed to know where it was hidden. Singh said he would come to Baltz’s home and tell him, but he never showed up.

Singh was later arrested by police and taken into custody. He was being held in Milwaukee County Jail on $3,000 bail.
