Brookfield Man Charged with Smoking Hashish in Stolen Car

Suspect went into car behind Town of Brookfield business to smoke drugs because it was left unlocked.

A Brookfield man is facing charges after he allegedly smoked hashish and fell asleep in a stolen car that had been left unlocked in a Town of Brookfield parking lot.

Derek D. Knight, 20, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Tuesday with one count of receiving stolen property and one count of disorderly conduct.

According to the criminal complaint, at 12:10 p.m. Monday officers were called to a parking lot behind a business in the 17800 block of W. Blue Mound Road after someone reported a suspicious vehicle with a man sitting inside. While checking the license plates of the vehicle, officers also discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen from the Brookfield Highway Department parking lot.

After making contact with Knight, the complaint states he told officers he had left his friend's house at 11 p.m. Sunday and went into the car at 2 a.m. so he could smoke hashish. He said he chose the car because it was unlocked.

From that time until police arrived, he remained in the car smoking hashish, sleeping and watching girls working at a nearby daycare center. He said the keys were still in the vehicle so he tried to listen to the radio, but it didn’t work.

When asked by officers why he would chose to go into the car, the complaint states Knight said “they should not have left it unlocked.”

Knight was freed from Waukesha County Jail Wednesday on a $1,500 signature bond.
