Brookfield Police Capture Bank Robber

After armed holdup of Village of Pewaukee bank, detective spots suspect car and trails suspect while more Brookfield officers surround him.

Brookfield police put the collar on a bank robber Wednesday afternoon, giving a big assist to their counterparts in the Village of Pewaukee.

A 21-year-old City of Pewaukee man was stopped and taken into custody on West Capitol Drive just short of Wauwatosa after an alert detective spotted him, according to Capt. Jim Adlam of the Brookfield force.

At 12:11 p.m., the suspect walked into a Guaranty Bank branch in the Pick 'n Save store at 1405 Capitol Dr. in the Village of Pewaukee. He showed a gun and demanded a bag of cash from tellers.

He fled, but witnesses were able to give police a description of his getaway car and a partial license number.

The Brookfield detective headed for Capitol Drive as a likely escape route, Adlam said, and soon spotted a car heading east that was a close match to the description. He got behind and ran its plates and found them a close match as well.

In an unmarked car, he was able to tail the suspect while calling in a force of patrol officers to cut him off. The stop was made simultaneously by multiple squads, Adlam said, in front of Wisconsin Memorial Park, 13235 W Capitol Dr.

It was just nine minutes after the bank sounded the alarm, Adlam said.

Officers found the bank bag in the car, and Adlam said a dye pack with the money had gone off, leaving the suspect's skin and clothing covered with residue.

Brookfield police turned the man over to Village of Pewaukee police for booking, Adlam said.
