Police Report: Cougars, Racoons and Dogs, Oh My!

Brookfield Police respond to calls about wild animals and wild humans. We're not in Kansas anymore.

Even though Christmas was approaching, there was little peace for the Brookfield police as they fielded numerous calls for service last week.

For the 10th time, a resident of Baythorn Way contacted police that the neighbor's barking dogs were outside without supervision and causing a nuisance. Police determined the dogs had free access to the backyard through a dog door and were not being neglected by the owners. However, officers did issue a citation to the owners when they returned home for creating a nuisance on Dec,. 20. Here's a suggestion: lock the dog door when you're not home.

Is there anything out there? Also on the Dec. 20, a resident of Tulane Street called to ask if anyone had reported seeing mountain lions or cougars in the neighborhood, after a neighbor had claimed seeing and hearing one the night before. Police officials haven't seen the wild animals in the area, but promised to keep an eye open while patrolling the neighborhood, just in case.

Just not right: The next day, on Wednesday, a resident of Robinwood Court reported seeing a sick raccoon near the restoration watershed project. She described the animal as not acting "raccoon-like." Animal Control was contacted and determined the raccoon was feeling fine. 

All this for a dog house? A caller from Kenosha repeatedly left threatening phone messages and profanity-laced emails at the offfices on Executive Drive. He was upset by the settlement he received for damages to his doghouse. Police asked him to stop using profanity when discussing the insurance issue and on Dec. 20 State Farm transferred his case file to a Nebraska office.

Starter graffiti: On Wednesday, employees reported graffiti on a rear door of the on Calhoun Road. The police report described the graffiti as "very poor quality and appears to have been done by a young juvenile." 

Not sure where you are? If you noticed stop and street signs missing from your neighborhood, all is well after workers at the discovered them inside the property on Wednesday. Police returned the city street signs to the Public Works Department and the state Department of Transportation retrieved the stop signs for re-installation. 

Needed cash for Christmas shopping: On Dec. 19, employees at on North Avenue reported the theft of $300 from the business. Police found pry marks on outside doors and various drawers inside the business. 

Needed cash for Christmas shopping, Part II: A caller on Mount Vernon Avenue reported a Christmas card containing $1,000 was stolen from under his Christmas tree. He suspected health workers who have been caring for his wife or one of the six family members who had been in the home on Wednesday when discovered the loss. 

We didn't want water: Police responded to  on Dec. 20 after three customers threw water in the face of an employee and the store manager assaulted them in response. The customers were arrested and cited for disorderly conduct, before being released to their parents. The store manager was also cited for disorderly conduct. 

Get a room: A man and woman were cited for disorderly conduct after being observed having sex in what police described as "the man's wife's car." The tryst was reported by employees at the  on Dec. 22, who have reported this couple previously. Officers told them to never return to the parking lot or face trespassing charges. 

What? Also on Dec. 22, a white male stole a soccer ball from the front yard of a residence on West Lane. The owner of the home witnessed the event and police were able to detain the suspect. However, the owner of the ball did not wish to press charges.
