Man Accused of Leaving Dead Mouse on Ex's Car

Suspect, 40, broke into his ex-girlfriend's Brookfield garage after she refused to answer the phone or door, charges allege.

A New Berlin man broke into his ex-girlfriend's garage in Brookfield and left a dead mouse on the hood of her car, charges allege.

Daniel J. Gebhardt, 40, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Wednesday with disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass. If convicted, he faces up to 21 months in prison and $21,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

At 12:57 a.m. Oct. 6, the victim was inside her home in the 1300 block of Ridgeway Drive when Gebhardt called her. She had broken up with him a month earlier, so she didn't answer.

Gebhardt continued to call for another 10 to 15 minutes, but the woman continued to not answer the phone. She then heard someone knock at the front door, but she didn't answer again. She then heard someone break in her garage service door, so she then called the Brookfield Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found the service door busted open, two lawn chairs tossed into the woman's back yard and a dead mouse placed on the hood of her car, which was parked inside the garage. The woman said the mouse wasn't there before and the chairs had been near her home.

Gebhardt was later interviewed by police. The complaint says he told officers that he called the victim, knocked on her door, and after she answered he threw a bench near the front door. He said he did enter the garage, but he denied placing a dead mouse on the car or putting the lawn chairs in the backyard. Gebhardt said he and the victim also work together and she was spreading rumors about him at the office. He told police he didn't handle the situation well, the complaint alleges.

Gebhardt will make his first court appearance Nov. 12.
