Man Accused of Pulling Box Cutter on Staff After Shoplifting

Suspect tells police the knife fell out of his pocket during the altercation, and he was only putting it back into his pocket.

A man pulled a box cutter knife and threatened to cut two Pick ‘n Save employees who were trying to stop him from stealing hygiene items, charges allege.

David Willis, 51, of Milwaukee, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Monday with felony intimidation of a victim, retail theft and disorderly conduct with use of a dangerous weapon. If convicted, he faces up to 11 years in prison and $36,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

On Friday, Willis was inside the store located at 12735 W. Capitol Dr., when a security officer saw him trying to steal a bottle of body wash. The officer then followed Willis and tried to block him from exiting the store with a manager.

Willis said he had pending arrest warrants and didn’t want to get the police involved, so he gave the manager the body wash and tried to walk past them and out the door. The two stopped him, which caused Willis to get belligerent and pull out the box cutter and threaten to cut and kill the employees.

The manager then stepped aside and let Willis exit the store where he was halted by police.

Willis denied waving the box cutter at the employees, saying he uses it to cut up copper he takes in for scrap metal and it fell out his pocket during the altercation and he moved to pick it up. He smelled of alcohol and continued to be belligerent to police and eventually had to be subdued.

Willis was being held in Waukesha County Jail on $1,000 bail.
