Man Hides Weed in Sleeping Child's Fist, Police Say

A 25-year-old Milwaukee man is accused of trying to hide a baggie of marijuana inside the hand of a sleeping 4-year-old in the back of his car.

Sedrick D. Sanders was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Monday with possession of THC, which is the active ingredient in marijuana. If convicted, he faces up to six months in prison and $1,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

At 11:30 p.m. Sunday, a Brookfield police officer was monitoring traffic on North Avenue near Lilly Road when Sanders was spotted doing 50 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour speed zone. The officer pulled Sanders over near Pilgrim Square Drive and began to investigate the stop as a possible intoxicated driver.

Sanders had an infant and 4-year-old child in the back seat. Both children were properly secured in restraint seats, however, the officer spotted a golf ball size bag of marijuana in the older child’s hand.

Sanders’ girlfriend came and picked up the children while he was taken to the Brookfield Police Department. He first said the bag must have been left in their by a friend and the child picked it up off the floor, but when an officer said it was improbable a child strapped into a car seat would unbuckle, get a bag and then rebuckle, Sanders admitted the marijuana was his.

Sanders is currently free on $200 bond while awaiting trial.
