Out-of-Control Driver Draws 3rd OWI Arrest

A frightened caller alerted Brookfield Police to a dangerously reckless driver on a busy thoroughfare, and a nearby patrol officer was able to stop him before he could do any damage.

He would prove to be a twice-convicted drunk driver, now on his third time through the system.

According to Brookfield police:

At 9:11 p.m. March 22, the 35-year-old Waukesha man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, third offense, after an anxious caller told police he was speeding, swerving wildly and repeatedly cutting off other drivers. She reported him southbound on North 124th Street at West Capitol Drive.

Fortunately, a Brookfield patrol officer was not far away and spotted the suspect's car just as he passed Burleigh Street. The officer said the man "accelerated rapidly" away from the intersection and both he and the suspect hit 70 mph in the 35-mph zone before he pulled him over south of North Avenue.

The driver said he was coming from a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant, where he "had a couple drinks."

The officer said the man smelled strongly of alcohol, and a record check showed operating while intoxicated convictions in 2000 in Iowa and in 2006 in Illinois.

The man failed field sobriety tests and was taken for a mandatory blood draw to determine his alcohol concentration. He was also given a speeding ticket.
