Photos: Firefighters Pass Boots for Good Cause

The Town of Brookfield Fire Department volunteered Friday for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Fill the Boot campaign.

For the third year, the Town of Brookfield Fire Department helped raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Fill the Boot Campaign.

At any one time Friday afternoon, up to a dozen town firefighters were trying to fill their boots with donations from passing motorists and pedestrians at the intersection of Blue Mound and Brookfield roads.

"People seemed to be very generous — giving $10s and $20s," Meghan Cary, MDA fund-raising coordinator, said as the crew started packing up their gear.

The final tally: $4,096 raised for the MDA.

Eric Jackson, a town firefighter / paramedic, said the department enjoys helping the MDA effort, which the International Firefighters Association began supporting more than 50 years ago in 1958.

"It's one of the more nationally recognized charities," Jackson said.

Town firefighters also sell pink cancer awareness T-shirts during the year, as well as the red "Help the Troops" shirts, he said.

All money donated to MDA's Fill the Boots campaign will go to help local MDA clients receive services, such as helping to send children and young adults to MDA Summer Camp in Camp Lake, purchase and repair wheelchairs and facilitate support groups and clinic visits at Children’s Hospital and Froedtert Memorial Hospital.
