Scooter Driver Leaves Injured Woman Behind Trying to Avoid 2nd OWI

After jolting his passenger off his motorbike, Brookfield man leaves her in the street while he tries to hide out from police.

If this was a romantic relationship, or even just a friendly one, it's probably over after a Brookfield man was arrested for his second drunken driving offense, and then some.

At 7:45 p.m. July 11, the 25-year-old was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving as well as for resisting arrest, failure to control his vehicle and failure to notify police of an accident, after he tipped his scooter at Woodland Place and Clare Bridge Lane.

His passenger, a young woman, was injured in the fall and called police after the suspect abandoned her in the street and fled into his grandparents’ home in the block.

His grandparents gave officers free access to the home, where they found the suspect on the couch, and he wouldn’t get up.

Officers noted that he had a “road rash” on the right side of his body, consistent perhaps with dumping a scooter on the pavement. The suspect, though, would not admit to even riding the scooter that night or ever having been with the young woman.

She, however, gave police a full, precise description of him and of exactly how he had bolted away from the crash, leaving her bruised and bleeding. His grandparents also told police the young man had indeed left their home on the scooter.

Even with all that evidence against him, the young man would not stand up. Officers noted a strong odor of alcohol and decided to place him under arrest, whereupon he struggled with them, still would not stand up, and had to forcibly removed from the couch to be handcuffed.

He was slurring and argumentative in his speech, officers said. He was taken to Elmbrook Hospital for treatment, where a forced blood sample was taken after he refused all alcohol tests.

The young woman was not seriously injured in the fall.
