Town Police to Crack Down on Drunken Drivers

The town will join a national effort called "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over." The city arrested five drunken drivers last weekend in a different effort.

Starting Friday, Town of Brookfield police officers will join a national effort to crack down on drunken driving, Town Police Chief Chris Perket said.

Dubbed "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," the effort will run through Sept. 5.

In Wisconsin last year, 220 people died and more than 3,500 people were injured in nearly 5,800 alcohol-related traffic incidents, according to a press release from Perket.

First-time convicted drunken drivers must install ignition interlock devices on any vehicle they drive, which tests their breath for sobriety before the car will start. If there is a minor in the vehicle, a first offense is a criminal charge.

Last weekend City of Brookfield police arrested five drunken drivers, including three stopped in a southeastern Wisconsin multi-jurisdictional High Visibility Enforcement traffic wave, Capt. Phil Horter said.

"The City of Brookfield Police Department has and will continue to place a strong emphasis on the detection and arrest of impaired drivers," Horter said.

"This emphasis occurs daily on all three patrol shifts and during traffic waves utilizing grant money. Voluntary compliance is the goal but traffic stops, detection and arrest will continue as long as necessary," he added.

Arrested in the city last weekend were a 29-year-old California woman (first offense), a 48-year-old Lannon man (sixth offense), a 28-year-old Franklin woman (second offense), a 67-year-old Hartland woman (first offense) and a 36-year-old Milwaukee man (second offense and marijuana possession).
