Two Banks Defrauded of Nearly $6K; Woman Charged

Two women, from Milwaukee and Charlotte, N.C., admit to cashing checks they got from the same man, police say.

Nearby $6,000 in forged checks were cashed at two Brookfield banks, at the hands of two women from Milwaukee and Charlotte, N.C., a criminal complaint alleges.

Chelsea L. Lloyd, 29, of Milwaukee, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Wednesday with two counts of uttering a forgery. If convicted, she faces up to six years in prison and $20,000 in fines.

In August 2011, police were investigating four incidents in which checks were forged and cashed at M&I Bank, 2225 N. Calhoun Rd., and Associated Bank, 1 N. Moorland Rd. Four checks were cashed at the two banks in May and June of 2011 for a total loss of $5,825.

Officers discovered two checks were cashed in Lloyd's name and the two others were cashed in another woman's name.

Police later found Lloyd and she said she got the checks from a man. U.S. postal inspectors found the other woman in Charlotte, N.C., and she also admitted to cashing the checks, saying she got them from the same man.

Lloyd will make her initial appearance in court Nov. 19.
