Ald. Lisa Mellone Resigns to Apply for City Clerk Post

Mellone is an applicant to replace retiring City Clerk Kristine Schmidt.

Brookfield Ald. Lisa Mellone announced Wednesday evening that she has resigned her elected post to apply for the city clerk job that will be open when longtime clerk Kristine Schmidt retires Aug. 19.

In an email to her constituents copied to Brookfield Patch, Mellone said she "never intended to resign mid-term, but the opportunity to possibly serve in a higher capacity as City Clerk presented itself."

She called the clerk's job a post she would "regret not pursuing" and said as clerk she would have "a strong desire to ensure continued fair, accurate, and reliable elections."

Mellone was first elected as alderman for the city's southeastern 7th district in 2006 and was re-elected without an election challenger in 2010.

The last time an alderman stepped down mid-term — Steve Ponto to become mayor — the council appointed a replacement, Buck Jurken. Aldermen serve four-year terms, and each of the city's seven aldermanic districts have two elected representatives. Mellone's fellow 7th district alderman is Renee Lowerr.

Here is Mellone's full email:

Dear District 7 Residents:

I have had the privilege and pleasure of serving as District 7 Alderperson of the City of Brookfield for the past 5 years and 4 months, but have tendered my resignation. I never intended to resign mid-term, but the opportunity to possibly serve in a higher capacity as City Clerk presented itself with the pending retirement of current City Clerk Kris Schmidt. It was appropriate for me to tender my resignation as Alderperson before submission of my application for this position. I felt this opportunity is one I would regret not pursuing despite losing the privilege of serving and representing the 7th District constituency.

As a candidate for office in two elections, I’ve come to appreciate and respect the election process and therefore, have a strong desire to ensure continued fair, accurate, and reliable elections while hopefully serving as City Clerk for Brookfield. Although I will miss the regular interactions with my council peers, I am confident the city as a whole is represented well. I am grateful for having had the opportunity to serve on the Council of this fine community and I offer my best wishes for the Council’s continued success.

Most importantly and with sincere gratitude, I thank you for the opportunity to represent the Seventh District.

Most appreciatively,

Lisa Mellone
