Aurora Introduces $11 Million Plan in Former Blast Fitness Building

Aurora Health Care will spend $11 to relocate and renovate Brookfield clinic at the site of Blast Fitness. Find out when the clinic will open.

Reports of the closing of the Brookfield location of Blast Fitness and a possible purchase by Aurora Health Care first surfaced in February, and it appears rumors of the deal were true.

Aurora presented its proposal at the Plan Commission meeting on Monday, and will spend $11 million on relocating and remodeling its Brookfield clinic in a larger space at the former Blast Fitness, 16895 W. Blue Mound Road, near the intersection with Calhoun Road.

Parking appeared to be the only point of discussion. Current standards require six stalls per every 1,000 square feet of space; however, the commission agreed to reduce that to slightly more than five.

Alderman Jerry Malone, who lives directly to the south of the building, said he didn't anticipate any complaints from his constituents.

"I haven't heard from anyone so far, just those who had been Blast Fitness customers and weren't happy that they closed," he said. "Aurora had problems with parking at their current location in Brookfield, so this should help."

In addition, the planned hours for the facility are less than that of Blast Fitness, so neighbors shouldn't experience any inconvenience, Mellone added.

According to the Business Journal, Aurora's new clinic will feature additional services including eye care, urgent care and women’s health. The Bluemound Road location also will add 50 employees to its current staff of 37, and is expected to handle 74,000 patient visits per year.

The building would retain the same footprint, with the exception of the addition of a covered drive up entry, which will be featured at the building's south entrance. It will reopen as a clinic as early as spring 2014, and will replace Aurora’s clinic at 13850 W. Capitol Drive in Brookfield.

A review of the site by the plan commission will take place one year after Aurora opens.
