Decision Delayed on Weapons Ban in City Buildings

Aldermanic absences on a city committee means issue won't get a vote until later this month.

A proposed resolution to ban the carrying of firearms — whether openly or concealed — into city buildings and on city land during special events is being put off until later this month.

Two of the five members of the Common Council's Legislative and Licensing Committee were absent Tuesday night, prompting the remaining members to ask to table the issue until the next meeting, possibly Oct. 18.

Aldermen Gary Mahkorn and Bill Carnell were absent. The committee and city staff, however, previously and asked the city attorney to draft the proposed resolution.

The committee could act on the resolution Oct. 18, and the Common Council could do as well that same night. The state's new law permitting the goes into effect Nov. 1.

Last night, aldermen in neighboring and other weapons from city buildings, although there were questions about enforcement and penalties for violations.
