Lilly Road Construction Confuses Motorists, Annoys Homeowners

City reminds people to observe road closure signs or risk a ticket.

People driving around barricades at the intersection of Lilly and Lisbon roads have caused concern for Brookfield police, the city engineering department and homeowners in the area.

Construction at the intersection started on Monday and police fielded five calls about people moving barricades, and construction signs or traffic in the area Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

A newly- designed intersection is being put in at the location, with new geometery and traffic controls, because 10 years ago, the intersection was constructed to temporarily allow overflow traffic from reconstruction of Highway 43, according to city engineer Jeff Chase. It became apparent since then that permanent traffic control and a different design was needed at the intersection.

The project is expected to last until mid-November, with this period of adjustment fairly typical as confused motorists become used to avoiding the area, according to Chase.

In the meantime, motorists are reminded that driving or moving the barricades could result in a ticket from police, with special enforcement of the area planned.

"Local traffic only" means drivers who have an origin or destination in the construction zone, in this case people from the four houses on the street, Chase said.

And drivers who do go around the barricades not only risk a ticket, they put themselves, construction workers and others in the area at risk.

"There are no traffic controls, the area is not lit, and starting tomorrow, there will be no road," said Chase.

Alternate routes for the area are posted for people coming in from the east and other options include using Capitol Drive to the south, 124th and Hampton to the north and Pilgrim to the west.
