Man Who Stole Gun From New Berlin Mayor Pleads Guilty

Cory T. Naber pleads guilty to one count of theft under plea agreement reached with prosecutors.

A former Brookfield man accused of stealing a handgun and other items from New Berlin Mayor Jack Chiovatero pleaded guilty to theft Thursday.

Cory T. Naber, 22, was convicted of one count of theft of movable property in Waukesha County Circuit Court. Under an agreement with prosecutors, five other charges against him were dismissed but will be considered at sentencing.

According to criminal complaints, Naber, who is a friend of Chiovatero’s daughter, stole the gun, two guitars and other items while staying at the mayor’s home last year. Naber pawned the items so he could get money to buy heroin.

Chiovatero said he never knew Naber was a drug user before he stayed at the home.

Naber was released from Waukesha County Jail on $3,000 cash bond in July, but was sent back to jail in September after he violated a substance use condition of his bail. He has remained in jail since.
